Resident doctors at Luis Eduardo Aybar hospital in the capital stopped work yesterday, Wednesday 12 September and called on the Minister of Public Health to resolve the problems the hospital is experiencing. They said that the doctors could not do their work due to the lack of basic supplies like latex gloves, saline solution, medicines, or sheets.

The doctors began by protesting outside the hospital, but the police intervened so they went on strike.

In addition, according to El Caribe, it is now impossible to get an appointment with a doctor in the areas of gynecology, cardiology, internal medicine, neurology, endocrinology and rheumatology until 2013. There are notices on the hospital walls telling patients who do not have appointments to come back after Three Kings Day on 6 January 2013.

Diario Libre reports today, Thursday 13 September that other leading public hospitals, including Dario Contreras, the Los Mina Maternity Hospital in Santo Domingo and the Juan Pablo Pina hospital in San Cristobal have not received the government subsidy for up to four months.
