Minister of Public Health Freddy Hidalgo says that the Ministry had accumulated a RD$1 billion debt with suppliers by the end of the term of his predecessor Bautista Rojas Gomez, who was in charge of the Ministry for six years. He confirmed news reports that subsidies to some public hospitals are three and four months behind. The hospitals are now in arrears with their suppliers, causing major deficiencies in services to the public. He was speaking after a two-hour meeting with representatives of the Dominican Medical Association (CMD), under Amarilis Herrera. They discussed the situation at the hospitals, and the need to humanize the medical services. A proposal for an overall public health employee wage increase was discussed at the Ministry of Public Health.

Meanwhile, the minister told the press that the Treasury (Ministry of Hacienda) had approved RD$352 million in subsidies for the hospitals for next week, expected to reach them by Tuesday 18 or Wednesday 19 September. He visited the Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital and said that an emergency budget of RD$12 million was being prepared for remodeling key areas, including surgery, maternity and emergency.
