Judge Awilda Reyes of the Fourth Penal Hall of the National District has ordered radio journalist Melton Pineda of El Gobierno de la Manana morning talk show to pay RD$5 million in compensation to fellow journalist Marino Zapete and sent him to three months in Najayo jail. Zapete had accused Pineda of defamation and presented as proof a recording where Pineda accuses Zapete of covering for crimes by the Police when he was the spokesman for the institution. In court, Zapete showed press clippings to prove his innocence. Zapete had requested six months in jail and RD$40 million in compensation.
