Casa Chepe imported sugar laced with sand

Pro-Consumidor, the national consumer rights watchdog, says that the brown sugar laced with sand imported by Casa Chepe from Brazil is not fit for human consumption. El Caribe quotes a press release from Pro-Consumidor and the Ministry of Public Health as saying that the company was notified that it had to withdraw the "sugar" from the national market. It has been on sale under the "Canaria" brand name since July. Numerous complaints about the sugar have been received, and two laboratory reports detected the presence of silicates and calcium carbonate as well as cellulose fibers. Casa Chepe, which imported 14,000 metric tons of the "sugar", says that it will remove the product from sale.
