Deputy Marino Collante, the chairman of the permanent commission of Hacienda in the Chamber of Deputies, is calling for a revision of some 35 laws that grant tax exemptions for different reasons. According to the legislator these tax exemptions cost the state over RD$118 billion a year. A report by Tania Hidalgo in Hoy gives one example as the Hydrocarbon Law (112-00), which benefits many companies, and costs the state in excess of RD$11 billion a year. However, the PRSC deputy believes that at least three dozen laws need to be looked at to assess their effectiveness and their cost to the state.

But the new director of the Tax Office (DGII), Guarocuya Feliz says that any reduction of tax exemptions should be gradual. He said that not all tax exemptions are a bad thing and that many exemptions have a positive effect on the productive sectors.
