The business climate in the Dominican Republic is a lot better than 10 years ago, but it still needs to be improved, says William Malamud, executive vice president of the American Chamber of Commerce in the DR.

During his contribution at a recent Economic Breakfast meeting at El Caribe, Malamud said that as far as direct investments are concerned "the general trend is that it is improving." However, he did express some concerns about judicial security and citizen safety, which he said were impacting investments. He also mentioned the issue of judicial security in relation to state contracts. "These are general issues, and at a macro level, things are much better than 10 years ago," he said.

One of the major points made by Malamud and his companions at the event was the fact that for the first time in history the biggest cost of doing business is now transport and logistics instead of tariffs and taxes as used to be the case. He gave the example of the cost of a container going from Shanghai to New York, which used to cost US$3,000 and now costs US$10,000. This will make some businesses think about relocating, "and we have to ask ourselves what we can do here to achieve this."
