Economist Fernando Alvarez Bogaert said yesterday, Sunday 16 September that the nation's deficit is closer to RD$101 billion than the RD$96 billion being quoted by businesspeople and independent economists. He said that in the last five years the government has accumulated a deficit of around RD$350 billion. He added that the Dominican government payroll is greater than the payroll of the Republic of Colombia (population 46 million: area 1.1 million km2).

During a television interview, Alvarez Bogaert, a former finance minister in the Mejia administration, said that there was a group that was willing to help President Medina triumph and resolve the country's economic crisis. According to El Nuevo Diario, Alvarez said that some of the measures already taken by Medina were good, and he mentioned the austerity measures and the reduction in public expenditure for the rest of the year. However, he said that these measures were insufficient. And he added that President Medina does not have to watch anyone's back, saying that: "President Medina will not have the moral authority to ask the people to make sacrifices if he does not tell them what he found when he took office."
