Hundreds of people, including prominent environmentalists, university professors, and community and union leaders, held a huge march in Santo Domingo yesterday, Sunday 16 September from Independence Park to the Presidential Palace, as part of a campaign for the government to refuse permission for the exploitation of a ferro-nickel deposit in Loma Miranda. The Loma Miranda is in the center of the watershed of the Yuma-Camu Rivers, which feed the Rincon and Hatillo reservoirs.
A delegation representing the demonstrators met with the Deputy Minister of the Presidency, Henry Molina.
The official said that President Medina was committed to finding an answer to the requirements of the sectors that feel that their rights have been violated. "The President will issue the document to everyone involved and will give an answer, like responsible Presidents do, to the citizens," he promised.
Molina revealed that he had been instructed to listen to the demands of the citizens who are fighting for the common good. In his efforts to be cordial, and as a symbolic act of his openness the official offered bottles of water to the demonstrators whose clothes were soaked in sweat. There was not enough water to go round and the official apologized to the group, to which Luis Carvajal, one of the demonstrators and a well-known environmentalist, told him: "Listen to me, what we want is for the water not to disappear in the Central Mountains. What we want is for the water from Loma Miranda to be guaranteed, that we prevent damage to the water of the Hatillo Dam by Barrick Gold, and that the other mining concessions like Uni-Gold in Restauracion or in San Juan de la Maguana do not endanger the country's water supply. There has to be water!"
Their protest is particularly aimed at the concessions the Fernandez administration granted to exploitation in Loma Mala (Monsenor Nouel), Sierra de los Siete Picos (Monte Plata) and Unigold (Dajabon).
