Minister of Sports Jaime David Fernandez has announced the celebration of Municipal Games nationwide in 2014, replacing the National Games. He said that after the municipal games the first-time Provincial Games would be held in 2015. For 2013, he said the Ministry would concentrate on helping local schools to participate in the National Scholastic Games, in which public and private schoolchildren can compete. He said the first priority of his government would be sports in schools and at the municipal level.
He called for the sports programs organized by the government, the Dominican Olympic Committee, sports federations and municipalities to be synchronized in order to encourage more people to take part in sports.
The scholastic games will focus on elementary and middle school children.
He announced that the celebration of national games was not on the Medina administration's agenda.
The country is dotted with mega sports installations that were built for the national games and then abandoned, at a great cost to the nation.
