Six people were killed and another two were injured when an SUV driven by Ramon Radhames Garcia left the road and ran into a group of people waiting for a bus opposite the town hall in Ranchito, in La Vega.
Garcia was uninjured, but police had to rescue him as a crowd was on the point of lynching him after the incident. Nevertheless the furious onlookers then set fire to the SUV in the middle of a bridge, causing traffic chaos.
The police have said that they will carry out an investigation to establish why the driver lost control.
