Russian ambassador Vladimir Zaemskiy visited President Danilo Medina yesterday, Tuesday 18 September and said that Dominicans exporters should make the most of the more than 15 flights a week from the Dominican Republic to export fruits and vegetables to Russia. In the 45-minute meeting, Zaemskiy told President Medina there was potential to increase the number of visitors, especially by adding Puerto Plata as a destination in addition to Punta Cana. Some 180,000 Russians visited last year, up from 50,000 in 2008. Zaemskiy said there was a market for Dominican produce both in Moscow as well as St. Petersburg. He said that a Russian phytosanitary commission had analyzed the products and made recommendations. The ambassador, who is based in Caracas, told Medina that Puerto Plata would be attractive to Russian tourists "because that province has all the facilities and the capacity, as well as the climate.
