Hundreds of sugarcane workers from San Pedro de Macoris, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Villa Altagracia, and Santo Domingo North and West are staging a peaceful protest outside the Treasury Ministry asking for their pensions, with placards saying that the pensions, which were approved three years ago, have not yet been paid.

The national coordinator of the Sugar Cane Workers Union, Jesus Nunez, says that some pensions that were approved in 2005 have not been received, and that President Leonel Fernandez agreed they would be paid in May, but so far the former workers have received nothing.

He said that since President Danilo Medina took over government, they were more optimistic that the 2,543 retired sugarcane workers would be paid their pension of RD$5,117 a month.
