At the weekly luncheon held by the Corripio Communications Group, British Ambassador Steven Fisher said that the Dominican Republic has a good level of trade with Great Britain, due in the main to agricultural exports.

Last year Britain exported goods worth US$160 million to the DR and imported US$120 million, which although a small percentage of overall British exports, had remained steady over the last five years.

Campos de Moya, president of the British Chamber of Commerce in the DR said that the main Dominican exports to the UK were sugar, cocoa, mangoes, bananas and other fruits, while the Dominican Republic imported whisky, luxury vehicles including Jaguar, Land Rover and Mini Cooper, machinery and medicines.

Trade attache Leonora Dipp de Martinez said that in 2011, the Dominican Republic bought 617,000 cases of whisky (20,000 bottles a day) costing around US$39 million.

Steven Fisher stressed that the Dominican Republic had great potential to develop the agriculture sector and pointed out that Green and Black, a British chocolate manufacturer only used Dominican cocoa. He went on to announce that a Commercial Forum would be held in the DR between 25 and 27 September to promote trade between the two countries.
