President Danilo Medina was in the east yesterday, Thursday 27 September for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of construction of the Extrme Park off the Boulevard del Este near Cabeza de Toro in Punta Cana. The park, which is being promoted as the largest and most modern in Latin America, is being built by a Spanish company at a reported cost of US$180 million.

The entertainment park, scheduled for completion in 2014, will have 30 attractions in the one million square meter property. They include an indoor ski slope, a 26,000 square meter swimming pool with capacity to generate 46 types of waves for use in surfing championships, a Formula 1 race simulator and a rollercoaster. The park plans also include a large amphitheater for staging shows, big disco and shopping areas.

Company spokesman Salvador Ballesteros said this would be time first that all these attractions are available in a single park. He said the center would strengthen the positioning of Punta Cana as a tourist destination. He expects many tourists to choose Punta Cana for the rides alone. He said the attraction would also be good for the hotels in the area.

News reports say that Medina arrived for the groundbreaking ceremony with a reduced security contingent and was on time, at 11am. These comments were made because his predecessor, Leonel Fernandez used to travel with a large entourage consisting of security and government officials and was known for his lack of punctuality.
