Yesterday, Sunday 30 September, more than 6,000 tree saplings were planted in the Jimenoa watershed by representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources and schoolchildren from La Vega and Constanza. The planting took place in the Las Palmas area, near the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve and brings the total for September to 1.8 million trees planted as part of the 10,000,000-tree goal set by the government. According to Hoy, October is Reforestation Month and Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez welcomed the head of the National Water and Sewer Institute and the technical director of the National Institute for Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) to the event.

However, the land that was planted was prepared by the forest rangers assigned to the area. A short time ago, it was burned down to make charcoal and harvest a crop. These rangers receive a salary of RD$5,300 a month for their very risky work, and some are owed two months back pay. Some of the professional foresters have worked in the area for three decades and they complained to Hoy reporter Llennis Jimenez that they live in poverty and lack even Social Security coverage.
