The Ministry of Tourism and DR1 Guides have just released the updated version of the popular Santo Domingo Guide. The guide is the DR1 editor's choice of attractions of Santo Domingo for international visitors and city residents, too. It reminds readers that in 2014, the city will be the Ibero-American Capital of Carnival. It includes specially prepared information for cruise travelers, with brief descriptions of the main historical buildings in the Colonial City, parks, and attractions in other areas of the city. Read about the Botanical Gardens and the Malecon seafront boulevard, and what makes these city areas special. There are lists of shops, restaurants and nightspots. Shopping suggestions in 10 to Take, and a new Gustavo Mejia Ricart shopping, restaurant and night area map. Read about Chinatown, the beauty parlor culture and what the city has to offer children. What's Cooking Santo Domingo is an overview of city restaurants. There is the lowdown on what the city has to offer for organizing meetings. On El Malecon, my first time sleeping in Santo Domingo was at the Jaragua, fun trip.

On the second floor adjacent to the pharmacy and near the escalators. Good selection of Cigars (Dominican and Cuban); Davidoff, Ashton, E.P. Carrillo, Cohiba, Arturo Fuente and others. Illy Italian coffee served in the air-conditioned lounge area (probably wine too), smoking allowed in the lounge area.
Calle Isabel la Católica, runs adjacent to the east side of Columbus Park (Parque Colon) and the Cathedral. Hard Rock Cafe, Pizzarelli, Conde de Penalbe Hotel and Cafe face Park Colon on El Conde. Also two cigar shops face park colon on el conde. Up the block from Pizzarelli on Calle Isabel la Católica is the Hodelpa Caribe Colonial Hotel (nice chica friendly hotel with secure parking). Money can be exchange at this hotel, but the rate is not the best. Within about 50 feet of this hotel are three places to change money. Two places across the street from the hotel and one adjacent to the hotel's parking area. One place is in a souvenir shop (also sells cigars) and one place is attached to a colmado (small grocery store).
Two blocks south of Park Colon on Calle Isabel la Católica at Calle Padre Bellini, there are money exchange guys who oftentimes stand outside their office, very friendly and nice guys. Photos, October 2013.

Across the street from the Hotel Mercure. French owned coffee shop next door to the cigar shop (you can take the coffee cup to the cigar shop and then return it) or coffee can be made in the cigar shop. Nice owners, they have a second cigar shop two blocks up Calle Hostos at Calle Mercedes (ground level below the Hotel Nomadas). Bundles of seconds, 6 for 500 pesos, they were enjoyable. Loose corona size cigars were 100 pesos and were good. Selection of Cigars from the Dominican Republic, Cuba and probably Honduras/Nicaragua.

"New La Romana and Punta Cana highways make driving easy. Traveling to La Romana from Santo Domingo now takes less than an hour-and-a-half as the new overpasses and express highway connecting San Pedro de Macoris with La Romana are open. On 30 November, the La Romana city bypass will open to the general public meaning it should take an hour to commute from La Romana to Santo Domingo, depending on city traffic in Santo Domingo.
From there it is another 40 minutes to Punta Cana. Once in Punta Cana enjoy traveling within that destination along the Boulevard Turistico del Este (BTE). President Danilo Medina was in Punta Cana last week to inaugurate the BTE and nearby roads and sidewalks for a total 65.2 km of major access roads in the eastern tourist area. It is now very easy to go from and to Santo Domingo to Punta Cana, including along the coastline route to Macao area beach resorts.
The Boulevard Turistico del Este is 30 km long, of which 26.4 km are four lanes wide, two in each direction from the Punta Cana International Airport. Another 3.6 km of two lanes continue to Macao in the north, 4 km of the Uvero Alto extension. The project also includes a further 17.2 km of secondary roads and sidewalks in Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro and Punta Cana area. The Boulevard Turistico is designed for a speed limit of 100 km per hour."

600 pesos to use for the day, cheaper daily rates with a weekly or monthly pass. Boxing, Olympic size pool, two floors of machines and free weights, rock climbing wall, skateboard ramp, three levels of free parking, open 7 days. Across the street, modeling agency John Casablancas and Elite. Half a block away Silver Sun Gallery Tower with Office Depot, Applebee's, Hills, C. House Milano Cafe, cinema, food court and Embassy Suites by Hilton, soon. I had a choose your own combination, lock from masterlock for the locker room. For the pool, I brought with me a lycra speedo swim cap. Attractive women at the Gym. Pickup basketball game with a referee.
A favorite spot in the Gazcue neighborhood, Calle Cesar Nicholas Penson and Ave. Dr. Delgado. Good prices for cigars, rolled on site. Owner has lived in the DR for more than 40 years (loves American cars). Good coffee, wine, whisky and rum, super friendly people, no dress code. About two blocks south of the Presidential Palace and about 4-5 blocks up from Avenida Independencia. Dominoes and chess sets, meat deli slicer machine for jamon serrano (Spanish dried ham) and cutting board for manchego cheese from Spain.
Zona Colonial, across from La Briciola Italian Restaurant. Menu is presented via an ipad tablet that is left on the table. Delicious food, tasting sizes. Chef is from Venezuela (he is also at Pat’e Palo Restaurant, location of a tavern for over 400 years, Plaza España, Zona Colonial). One of the managers at Lulu is a very nice guy from Bogota. Cigars for sale at Lulu.
Renovations completed on some, ongoing on others.
Free parking the times I used it. Very nice and friendly workers at the C. House Milano Cafe (coffee and food). Workers at the Office Depot were very nice. Hills (Cuban owned), other locations including Punta Cana, has a bar/lounge area and a separate cigar lounge. Met a guy from Spain at the cigar shop at hostos and el conde, who worked in the cigar business in cuba for twenty years. About 30 minutes or so from the Sheraton Hotel to the Monument in San Cristóbal. Malecon straight west will put you in front of the Monument, San Cristóbal. 30 peso toll immediately after the cabañas (no toll when returning to Santo Domingo). Mini buses run back and forth between Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal, throughout the day and into the evening. Also from Avenida 27 de Febrero to Plaza de Banderas, an entrance there for a 4 lane highway to San Cristóbal.

I forgot to mention, last week while sitting in a restaurant with a buddy two guys from Denmark asked us where is the closest hospital? We told them were it was, but it's a public hospital and you might not want to go there. They replied we are not sick or injured but we lost our friend last night and we are supposed to leave today. I'm thinking how you lose your friend he isn't like a set of car keys.
They told us they were partying in the Cave at Mirador Sur park and their buddy left with two girls. They were worried because the girl who was driving was pretty drunk. To make matters worse, they didn't know his number? Strange but ish happens. I didn't read or hear about a dead foreigner this week so hopefully they found him and he has a wild story to share on the trip back home. They were contemplating should they call his parents. Reminded me of the Hang Over

Most Saturday nights from 8 oclock on, there are usually car clubs that meet up in Galeria 360 in the downstairs parking (the owner has a couple of nice rides. So does the owner of CCN/Jumbo/Nacional) Lots of "hijos de mami y papi" with some pretty nice cars. One of them even has a Lexus LFA. Serious fucking money.
Cool to check out if you're a car lover. Galeria360 is next door to IKEA.

Ingenio Boca de Nigua was a favorite "interrogation" location for Trujillo's henchmen back in the day. Lots of neighbors have live there for decades, and can tell you lots of stories about gunshots and screams.

There's also another one in San Cristobal called the casa de caoba, that was a cement frame and the rest made primarily of Mahogany. It wasn't a particularly nice looking house, and is an empty shell now. It was his favorite house in San Cristobal, (he was coming from there the night he was assassinated).
The legend about the house on the hill (el castillo del Cerro) in San Cristobal has it that Trujillo had it built, and when he saw it, didn't like it. He disliked it so much, it's said he never spent a single night there. I think it's been converted to a military training school, or an elementary school. I'm not sure.

Crowne Plaza Hotel is the former Intercontinental V Centenario Hotel (still part of IHG Group, new Intercontinental Hotel going up adjacent to Plaza Acropolis on Avenida Winston Churchill).
