Santo Domingo Guide 2013
The Ministry of Tourism and DR1 Guides have just released the updated version of the popular Santo Domingo Guide. The guide is the DR1 editor's choice of attractions of Santo Domingo for international visitors and city residents, too. It reminds readers that in 2014, the city will be the Ibero-American Capital of Carnival. It includes specially prepared information for cruise travelers, with brief descriptions of the main historical buildings in the Colonial City, parks, and attractions in other areas of the city. Read about the Botanical Gardens and the Malecon seafront boulevard, and what makes these city areas special. There are lists of shops, restaurants and nightspots. Shopping suggestions in 10 to Take, and a new Gustavo Mejia Ricart shopping, restaurant and night area map. Read about Chinatown, the beauty parlor culture and what the city has to offer children. What's Cooking Santo Domingo is an overview of city restaurants. There is the lowdown on what the city has to offer for organizing meetings. Highlights of side trips to Boca Chica and Juan Dolio for beaches and golf and culture at the San Pedro de Macoris rum historical center. Airlines flying into Las Americas and La Isabela airports are listed and there are updated maps of the Colonial City, Santo Domingo, Boca Chica and Juan Dolio and the Recommended Road Map to the Dominican Republic.

On El Malecon, my first time sleeping in Santo Domingo was at the Jaragua, fun trip.
Santo Domingo (formerly Ciudad Trujillo).
Palacio de los Deportes and Avenida 27 de Febrero, Santo Domingo, República Dominicana.
Street with vehicles and pedestrians.
General Andrews Airport was located south of Avenida Kennedy and west of Avenida Maximo Gomez. In the photo parts of that airport are visible. Centro Olimpico exists there today.
Popular spot some nights. Has a parking lot behind the building. https://foursquare.com/v/el-hangar/4d02677b60e737048881e9aa

And Ms. Santo Domingo Norte, 2012.
On the second floor adjacent to the pharmacy and near the escalators. Good selection of Cigars (Dominican and Cuban); Davidoff, Ashton, E.P. Carrillo, Cohiba, Arturo Fuente and others. Illy Italian coffee served in the air-conditioned lounge area (probably wine too), smoking allowed in the lounge area.
Calle Isabel la Católica, runs adjacent to the east side of Columbus Park (Parque Colon) and the Cathedral. Hard Rock Cafe, Pizzarelli, Conde de Penalbe Hotel and Cafe face Park Colon on El Conde. Also two cigar shops face park colon on el conde. Up the block from Pizzarelli on Calle Isabel la Católica is the Hodelpa Caribe Colonial Hotel (nice chica friendly hotel with secure parking). Money can be exchange at this hotel, but the rate is not the best. Within about 50 feet of this hotel are three places to change money. Two places across the street from the hotel and one adjacent to the hotel's parking area. One place is in a souvenir shop (also sells cigars) and one place is attached to a colmado (small grocery store).
Two blocks south of Park Colon on Calle Isabel la Católica at Calle Padre Bellini, there are money exchange guys who oftentimes stand outside their office, very friendly and nice guys. Photos, October 2013.
From Mr. Happy; http://arquitexto.com/2013/08/tu-nueva-ciudad-colonial-inicio-de-los-trabajos-de-reforma-integral-de-calles-en-la-ciudad-colonial/. Work has begun on streets in zona colonial.
I was also told that perhaps Pacos Cafe (Grand's) at the beginning of El Conde may also change money.
15 pesos per hour (about 35¢ cents U.S.). On Calle Jose Reyes at El Conde. There is a Politur Station at the corner of El Conde and Calle Jose Reyes, Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo.
Cristóbal Colón = Christopher Columbus. Park Colón has a Cathedral and the pedestrian street El Conde passes adjacent to the Park. Souvenir shop, hotel, cigar shops, an amber museum and shop, cafes and rentals for a motorized three wheel device, can be found on El Conde facing Columbus Park. https://www.condepenalba.com/en/pages/restaurante

Hodelpa Caribe Colonial Hotel, around the corner rents bicycles.
Work has begun, http://tunuevaciudadcolonial.do/site/
La Enoteca de Vinos, wine shop, supposedly open everyday till 2AM, http://www.vinos.com.do/laenoteca.html . Next door to La Enoteca is Lulu tasting bar, http://www.lulu.do/ . Across the street from La Enoteca de Vinos, is La Briciola Italian Restaurant, I have been told the owner is a nice guy (place is full on St. Valentine's Day, Dia de Amor), http://www.labriciola.com.do/ . Near La Briciola on Calle Arzobispo Meriño is Doubles Bar, pub type bar, http://www.zonacolonial.com/goingout/doublesbar
Across the street from the Hotel Mercure. French owned coffee shop next door to the cigar shop (you can take the coffee cup to the cigar shop and then return it) or coffee can be made in the cigar shop. Nice owners, they have a second cigar shop two blocks up Calle Hostos at Calle Mercedes (ground level below the Hotel Nomadas). Bundles of seconds, 6 for 500 pesos, they were enjoyable. Loose corona size cigars were 100 pesos and were good. Selection of Cigars from the Dominican Republic, Cuba and probably Honduras/Nicaragua.
From DR1 travel newsletter:
"New La Romana and Punta Cana highways make driving easy. Traveling to La Romana from Santo Domingo now takes less than an hour-and-a-half as the new overpasses and express highway connecting San Pedro de Macoris with La Romana are open. On 30 November, the La Romana city bypass will open to the general public meaning it should take an hour to commute from La Romana to Santo Domingo, depending on city traffic in Santo Domingo.
From there it is another 40 minutes to Punta Cana. Once in Punta Cana enjoy traveling within that destination along the Boulevard Turistico del Este (BTE). President Danilo Medina was in Punta Cana last week to inaugurate the BTE and nearby roads and sidewalks for a total 65.2 km of major access roads in the eastern tourist area. It is now very easy to go from and to Santo Domingo to Punta Cana, including along the coastline route to Macao area beach resorts.
The Boulevard Turistico del Este is 30 km long, of which 26.4 km are four lanes wide, two in each direction from the Punta Cana International Airport. Another 3.6 km of two lanes continue to Macao in the north, 4 km of the Uvero Alto extension. The project also includes a further 17.2 km of secondary roads and sidewalks in Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro and Punta Cana area. The Boulevard Turistico is designed for a speed limit of 100 km per hour."

LOL.
Santo Domingo, Puerta del Conde (the tank was parked).
http://arturofuentecigarclub.com/ probably about a block from GBP. On Avenida 27 de Febrero, near the northeast corner of Avenida Tiradentes (Ave. Alma Mater south of 27 de Febrero). The actor who played Sam from the Lord of the Rings, visited.
Gym opens at 5:30AM, at the Dominican Fiesta Hotel. 600 pesos to use the gym. 800 pesos to use the gym and pool. Open air staircase from the lobby, down one flight for the office where you pay (gym and entrance to the pool on this level). 8th floor lounge and bar, Azotea at the Dominican Fiesta Hotel, is very nice, floor to ceiling windows with a view of the Sea. Glass enclosed cigar lounge inside the lounge area. Jazz Friday nights in the Azotea Lounge, Dominican Fiesta Hotel, http://jazzendominicana.blogspot.com/
I drove past the El Embajador Hotel and stopped there to say hello to an amiga who works there, remodeled lobby and bar area.

A new hotel in zona colonial, opening March, 2014, http://www.casasdelxvi.com/
From Frommer's: "Ciudad Colonial, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
This UNESCO World Heritage Site packs in cathedral, fort, and other ancient buildings to create one of the Caribbean's richest historic areas. Now, with the 2013 completion of the new, four-lane Coral highway, it takes half the time to reach the ancient sights from the resorts of Punta Cana—you can get there in two hours, not four, making day-trips possible. The Dominican government is also pedestrianizing the old city, bringing in more cafés and shops, and keeping an eye on the quality of its tourist amenities. A new luxe hotel, Las Casas del XVI, opens in 2014 in a collection of old buildings from the 1500s. Santo Domingo is coming of age for tourists—even JetBlue flies there now—and because of the highway, you no longer have to choose between all-inclusive beach vacation or a city-oriented DR vacation. You can now experience both sides of the country." http://www.frommers.com/slideshows/847926-frommer-s-top-destinations-for-2014#slide848254

To check the balance on a Claro pre-paid sim card cell number, maybe: *122# and press send. https://www.aryty.com/ and https://www.ezetop.com/ can be used to add minutes to DR prepaid cell phone numbers, with a bank card or credit card, starting at $5US increments. Cards with a scratch off code on the back can be purchased, I have seen starting at 60 pesos (some shops can also add minutes). For Claro dial something like 1133 and press send and then enter the code that appears under the scratch off part of the card (instructions are on the back of the card).

Former Intercontinental V Centanario Hotel, Avenida George Washington (El Malecon) and Avenida Pasteur. I took the elevator to the third floor and walked down to the pool deck (gym and spa there as well). At the spa desk (massages and other spa services offered there), I was told the price to use the pool (for a person not staying at the hotel) was 1000 pesos. Daily rate with a one week pass was much less. Bar on the deck as well.
Near the "B" gates for departing passengers. From their menu, seems they might offer full body massage in a private cabin.
Avenida Abraham Lincoln and Avenida John F. Kennedy. Metro stop across the street from the entrance. Food court, cinema, Jumbo Supermarket, various banks with offices and ATM machines. I was told by a guy from Spain, that the tapas were good in the La Taperia Restaurant in Agora Mall.

Guest friendly if you check in with the chica, otherwise a fee. Around the corner and partly facing the pool deck is the Hotel Shakey, chica friendly. Across the street is the Torre Veiramar 1 apartment building, which sometimes has short term rentals. Up the block from the Crowne Plaza is the Mystik Hotel, up the other block the Maison Gautreaux Hotel, which are chica friendly. Within two blocks, Duque Wellington Hotel, Hotel Navarro and Hotel Alcaldeza. Riazor, Jaguar and others within walking distance.

Cabaña time, for a happy hour is what I did my first night. Costa Azul Cabañas on Autopista 30 de Mayo (El Malecon), Ciudad Amor, Santo Domingo. Stripper pole, waterbed, regular bed, jacuzzi, disco lights, food, drinks, porno on tv, music, sex chair.

600 pesos to use for the day, cheaper daily rates with a weekly or monthly pass. Boxing, Olympic size pool, two floors of machines and free weights, rock climbing wall, skateboard ramp, three levels of free parking, open 7 days. Across the street, modeling agency John Casablancas and Elite. Half a block away Silver Sun Gallery Tower with Office Depot, Applebee's, Hills, C. House Milano Cafe, cinema, food court and Embassy Suites by Hilton, soon. I had a choose your own combination, lock from masterlock for the locker room. For the pool, I brought with me a lycra speedo swim cap. Attractive women at the Gym. Pickup basketball game with a referee.
A favorite spot in the Gazcue neighborhood, Calle Cesar Nicholas Penson and Ave. Dr. Delgado. Good prices for cigars, rolled on site. Owner has lived in the DR for more than 40 years (loves American cars). Good coffee, wine, whisky and rum, super friendly people, no dress code. About two blocks south of the Presidential Palace and about 4-5 blocks up from Avenida Independencia. Dominoes and chess sets, meat deli slicer machine for jamon serrano (Spanish dried ham) and cutting board for manchego cheese from Spain.
Zona Colonial, across from La Briciola Italian Restaurant. Menu is presented via an ipad tablet that is left on the table. Delicious food, tasting sizes. Chef is from Venezuela (he is also at Pat’e Palo Restaurant, location of a tavern for over 400 years, Plaza España, Zona Colonial). One of the managers at Lulu is a very nice guy from Bogota. Cigars for sale at Lulu.
Renovations completed on some, ongoing on others.
Free parking the times I used it. Very nice and friendly workers at the C. House Milano Cafe (coffee and food). Workers at the Office Depot were very nice. Hills (Cuban owned), other locations including Punta Cana, has a bar/lounge area and a separate cigar lounge. Met a guy from Spain at the cigar shop at hostos and el conde, who worked in the cigar business in cuba for twenty years. He told me Hoyo de Monterrey Cuban cigars have the best leaves (he is good friends with the Robaina family, who also make cigars). Food court and cinema up the escalators.
Applebee's has indoor and outdoor seating, numerous televisions with sports and one wall with images from baseball.
Plaza España, Zona Colonial, with a very nice amiga from San Cristóbal.
Photos from the Silver Sun Gallery parking. Sensors, trigger when a car parks in a space and the digital readout changes, http://www.parking-net.com/parking-news/tcs-international/silver-sun-gallery and http://www.tcsintl.com/ . Saw a similar system at the Agora Mall.
Parking in zona colonial at the garage at El Conde and Calle Jose Reyes, was easy, 15 pesos per hour.
http://www.santodomingotourism.com/shopping/art/
Zona Colonial, one building over from Bolos is the Hotel Naemie (nice), http://casanaemie.com/ at the corner is the Hotel Casa del Sol, owned by a nice Frenchman, chica friendly, some rooms with balconies, has a building across the street for secure parking, diagonally across the street a colmado, http://hotel-casadelsol.com/hotel-eng.html Around the corner from Casa de Sol is Hotel Portes 9, facing the park, nice video on their facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/portes9 photos, http://www.hotels.com/ho451238/hotel-portes-9-santo-domingo-dominican-republic/ and also on airbnb.
On the corner of Calle Isabel la Católica and Calle Padre Bellini is a money exchange office with friendly workers.
$15US per day or $25US if you want food included. Attractive University students work at out at the gym. Met two 30 year old Dominicanas in the pool, the last trip. Beverages and/or food can be ordered at the pool bar. Cigar lounge in the lobby, between the lobby bar and Asian restaurant. Cigar shop in the lobby run by friendly Haitian guys (Havana Club rum for sale in that cigar shop). Rhumba deluxe bar about a 1/4 of a block east of Ave. Maximo Gomez on the north side of Ave. 27 de Febrero.
Banco Popular ATM across from the coffee and cake place in the lobby (past the elevators). Nice bathrooms in the lobby. Casino entrance from the lobby (large denomination money can be broken into 100 pesos notes in the casino). Gift shop sells phone recharge (minutes) for Claro, Orange (probably other cell phone companies as well), also sells cigars. Probably free wifi in the lobby.
Flew out of HPN (Westchester, N.Y.) airport (first time), with a connecting flight at MCO (Orlando, Florida). Parking at the State University of New York, Purchase campus (proceeds benefit students), open 24/7 with a shuttle bus, http://www.pp2f.org/ .
JetBlue Embraer 190 airplane for all legs of the trip to Santo Domingo. Watched Gravity and the latest Hobbit movie for free.
BanReservas money exchange booth on the second floor of the SDQ airport near the escalators (42.90 pesos to $1US Dollar, March 17, 2014). Also on the second floor near the escalators is a pharmacy and next to the pharmacy, Cabinet Cigar Shop and Lounge.
Recently remodeled, between the Malecon and Avenida Independencia. Calle Vicini Burgos runs along one side of the park (very well lit at night). Plaza Juan Barón is close. Hotel El Señorial, Papos and a colmado on Calle Vicini Burgos. Hotel Alcaldeza 1/2 a block away, Hotel Maison Gautreaux a block away, Crowne Plaza Hotel a block away, Clinica Abreu within a few blocks.
Nissan Versa from Alamo had about 16,000 kilometers (about 10,000 miles) on the odometer.
Not to be confused with another place called Paseo Colonial (which is further north in Zona Colonial). Residencial Paseo is about a block up from the Malecon and about two blocks south of El Conde. Nice street with another residential building across the street, Narai is also on the same street. Further up the same street part of the La Castilla buildings, http://lacastillacolonial.com/ . Parking garage at Calle Reyes and El Conde a few blocks away.
There is also a $500US per night, private home (with swimming pool) for rent in Zona Colonial on airbnb.

I'll call to get more information.
I have stayed in three apartment buildings in Santo Domingo and no problem with friends visiting (torre=tower). Individual owners of apartments may have their own rules regarding their apartments. The apartments I stayed at, guests were permitted, as well as cigar smoking.
Across the street from the La Castilla Residences is the Porcelain Museum, (Calle Reyes). Residencial Paseo has a gate that faces Calle Reyes as well. http://www.elcaribe.com.do/2013/10/19/museo-porcelana
On Calle Isabel la Católica is the home where Juan Pablo Duarte (Father of the Dominican Republic) was born, http://www.guidegecko.com/santo-domingo/museums/museo-casa-duarte/p,608189545
Also the Telecommunications Museum on Calle Isabel la Católica, http://www.mydestination.com/dominicanrepublic/things-to-do/190268/museum--cultural-center-of-telecommunications
Museo Bellapart (not in Zona Colonial) has some nice works;

Visited the first night with two amigas. Beautiful furniture inside. Video screen appears when the band takes a break. Glass of wine was about 225 pesos. Might be closed Sunday night. It is located about half a block east of Tiradentes on the north side of 27 de Febrero.
Taberna Vasca, https://foursquare.com/v/la-taberna-vasca/4b4a0262f964a520d07726e3/photos about three blocks up from the Mercure Hotel, on Calle Hostos at Calle Mercedes (diagonally across the street is a cigar shop, owned by the same guy who owns the shop at Hostos and El Conde, Hotel Nomadas above the cigar shop, to the left on Calle Mercedes is Mojiganga Bar). Chatted with the French owner of La Taberna Vasca, very nice guy, a Dominican guy in his 20's played guitar, tranquil music. Had a glass of Barcelo Rum with lime, ravioli appetizer and then seafood soup. Desert was something like Italian ice shaped into balls with what seemed like a cognac sauce, service was excellent. The waiter then brought over two long bottles and poured equal amounts from each into a shot glass (sweet drink, digestive, it was good).
D´ Luis Parrillada on the Malecon about 4-5 blocks south of El Conde, Zona Colonial, open 24/7, open air, casual. Go just for drinks or a juice or an appetizer or a meal, good service. Across the street is Cameroon Cigar Lounge and Shop, also Foxys and about 200 feet from Foxys is Bady Dolls. https://foursquare.com/v/cameroon-cigar-lounge--shop/4f9481dde4b03742daf5e40e/photos
Pacos (Grandes) at the beginning of El Conde probably open 24/7. Adrian Tropical on the Malecon just past the Sheraton and Renaissance Jaragua Hotel, probably open 24 hours. Manolos behind the Renaissance Jaragua Hotel, open 24 hours. Barra Payan on Ave. 30 de Marzo near Ave. 27 de Febrero open 24 hours. https://foursquare.com/v/barra-payan/4b4a665cf964a520788626e3/photos
Food at Lulús was good, Zona Colonial http://www.lulu.do/

Photo of the entrance on Calle 19 de Marzo. When coming from the pontoon bridge (puente flotante), Calle 19 de Marzo is the first street where you can make a right from the Malecon to enter Zona Colonial. Narai is on the same block as the Residencial Paseo. Narai is a nice building with a rooftop pool and underground parking. I have seen one apartment at Narai, http://www.narairesidence.com/#/narai_pictures/narai_pictures/image_2 listed on homeaway.com for a short term rental.
Residencial Paseo also has a gate that faces Reyes Street and a Church.
Lulu and La Enoteca Wine and Spirits Shop is about a block south of the Conde de Peñalba Hotel and Cafe (Parque Colón - Columbus Park). Lulu and Enoteca are just about behind the Cathedral. I believe you can buy a bottle at La Enoteca and drink it at Lulu. Across the Street from Lulu (Calle Merino) is La Briciola Italian Restaurant and Doubles Bar.
http://bocaord.wordpress.com/2013/07/02/romantica-combinacion-vinos-y-la-zona-colonial-visita-nueva-tienda-la-enoteca/
If you need another phone number for Residencial Paseo, let me know.
Next door to La Leyenda del Cigarro, near Hotel Mercure, ( http://www.fodors.com/world/caribbean/dominican-republic/santo-domingo/review-586207.html ) buy a coffee and drink it while smoking a cigar at the cigar shop (cigar shop has cigars from Dominican Republic, Cuba, Honduras/Nicaragua), friendly workers.
Metal tube sold with some cigars, can help protect the cigar during transit.

In Zona Colonial, about 4 blocks south of El Conde. Café de Toi is up the block and around the corner from the Baby Dolls (El Malecon). Owner of Café de Toi is very nice. No sign outside, opens after 8PM and stays open till whenever. First time I visited years ago, exited there after 6AM. Casual, relaxed atmosphere. Also known as La Resistencia. In March 2014, a small bottle of Presidente beer cost 200 pesos. http://www.touringdominicanrepublic.com/donde-y-como-es-el-cafe-de-toi/
In a plaza on the second floor, about four blocks west of the rear entrance of the Hilton Hotel, on Avenida Independencia. https://es-es.facebook.com/platinumdiscoclub
Close is Plaza Capri, http://www.plazacapri.com/ which has short term apartment rentals.
In this area also Doll House Gentleman's Club, Five Star International (sports betting place), San Geronimo Casino, the former Isla Gas Station has a new name (with a logo of a sea turtle), Vesuvio Restaurant, Cinemas at the Malecon Center and Casa de Modelos.

Also La Lasagna (west of Avenida Lope de Vega), http://www.lalasagna.com/ . A few blocks east is Silver Sun Gallery (Office Depot there, http://officedepot.com.do/empresa/) and Body Shop Naco Gym. At Avenida Lope de Vega and Avenida Gustavo Mejia Ricart is Tecnomundo, http://www.tecnomundo.com.do/ sales and service of electronics. I took a netbook there and for around 600-700 pesos, was told the screen was bad (I bought a new screen and installed it myself when I returned to the States). I could have used the netbook if I would have thought about connecting it to a tv or other monitor with a VGA cable.

Tetas reminds me of a chica I took out of 305 last trip (March 2014), fun chica. I let her drive the rental at 3AM in Gazcue to the hotel.
First left after crossing the Bosch or Duarte bridges (from the direction of Zona Colonial). Street parking, La Barrica has a parking lot.

Probably free wifi in the lobby.

ezetop.com or Aryty.com can be used to add minutes onto a prepaid sim card account for orange, claro, viva, tricom with a bank debit or credit card starting at $5US increments.
If you make a left out of the Crowne Plaza Hotel and walk to the corner (parking lot and taxi guys on that corner) and make a left, about 100 feet up that block is an inexpensive restaurant with good food (eat there or to go, para llevar, pronounced like yay-var).
About another 100 feet up that block is the Maison Gautreaux Hotel, chica friendly, good security, jacuzzi on the 2nd or 3rd floor terrace, rates about $50US per night, http://www.maisongautreaux.net/
About a block from the Maison Gautreaux Hotel on a side street that intersects that street is the Hotel Alcaldeza, chica friendly, secure parking, rates about $50US per night.
On the same block as the Maison Gautreaux Hotel is a place to buy cut flowers and a steak restaurant.
If you exit the Crowne Plaza Hotel and go to your right, at the next corner make a right, about 150 feet up that block on the right is the Hotel Shakey (apartments, new) chica friendly, secure parking, http://www.hotelshakey.com/
Next door to the Hotel Shakey is a casa (old name was Venezia), had a nice selection of chicas in the evening when I visited March 2014. Across the street is a Haitian fruit vendor who also sells paintings.
Further up the block is sky high casa, then satin dolls casa, then Hotel Mystik, a colmado (small grocery store), a hot food stall, a place that sells filtered water, girls house casa was not open March 2014. At the corner is Villar Hermanos Restaurant/Bakery/Sandwiches/Coffee, good restaurant, eat there or to go (they also have an outdoor seating area and two parking lots). Across the street from Villar Hermanos is an ice cream shop, a small colmado, hardware store and diagonally across from Villar is a pharmacy where cialis or viagra can be purchased. Across from the outdoor seating at Villar is 305 casa. On that block of Avenida Independencia is Hotel Duque Wellington and Hotel Navarro and a larger colmado.
About a block to the right when exiting the Crowne Plaza Hotel, is the Hotel Sheraton (maybe a new starbucks there), pure disco and a casino.
For the ATMs I choose Spanish as the language. For Banco Popular ATMs, corrientes is checking, efectivo is cash, they give predetermined options like 5,000 pesos or you can input your own amount.
Dominican Fiesta Hotel has a good weight room. Body Shop Naco Gym, also.

About 30 minutes or so from the Sheraton Hotel to the Monument in San Cristóbal. Malecon straight west will put you in front of the Monument, San Cristóbal. 30 peso toll immediately after the cabañas (no toll when returning to Santo Domingo). Mini buses run back and forth between Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal, throughout the day and into the evening. Also from Avenida 27 de Febrero to Plaza de Banderas, an entrance there for a 4 lane highway to San Cristóbal.

From Lonely Planet: "Visiting the Reserva Antropológica Cuevas del Pomier is like reading a history book written in stone. There are 55 limestone caves in the area just 10km north of central San Cristobal, five of which are open to the public, with Cave 1 carrying the mother lode, some 590 prehistoric paintings. The caves contain thousands of drawings and carvings that constitute the most extensive example of prehistoric art yet discovered in the Caribbean, including works by Igneri and Caribs as well as the Taínos."

I forgot to mention, last week while sitting in a restaurant with a buddy two guys from Denmark asked us where is the closest hospital? We told them were it was, but it's a public hospital and you might not want to go there. They replied we are not sick or injured but we lost our friend last night and we are supposed to leave today. I'm thinking how you lose your friend he isn't like a set of car keys.
They told us they were partying in the Cave at Mirador Sur park and their buddy left with two girls. They were worried because the girl who was driving was pretty drunk. To make matters worse, they didn't know his number? Strange but ish happens. I didn't read or hear about a dead foreigner this week so hopefully they found him and he has a wild story to share on the trip back home. They were contemplating should they call his parents. Reminded me of the Hang Over

I didn't read or hear about a dead foreigner this week so hopefully they found him and he has a wild story to share on the trip back home. They were contemplating should they call his parents. Morgan Hospital (now I believe it is called Aybar Hospital), large public hospital (reminds me of Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y.). About 7 blocks north of Avenida 27 de Febrero, due north of Zona Colonial, from what I recall.
Dudes going off and doing their thing with an amiga from a club or other venue, I have seen before in Santo Domingo.
Getting lit and staying out late the night before departing, I have done. Woke up late the day of departure and had to rush to the airport for an early afternoon flight.

I've only seen the vibrating seats in Galeria 360. They are not worth the money, as they are poor coordinated with the action on the screen. We're talking about a seat that shakes when somebody says something to someone else on screen, but shake on and off when there's action.
We actually got a kick out the uncoordinated shakes. lol
Edited to add:
Most Saturday nights from 8 oclock on, there are usually car clubs that meet up in Galeria 360 in the downstairs parking (the owner has a couple of nice rides. So does the owner of CCN/Jumbo/Nacional) Lots of "hijos de mami y papi" with some pretty nice cars. One of them even has a Lexus LFA. Serious fucking money.
Cool to check out if you're a car lover. Galeria360 is next door to IKEA.

At the Botanical Garden, http://www.jbn.gob.do/
Take Avenida Lincoln north to Ave. Kennedy (Ave. Lincoln becomes Avenida de Los Próceres north of Ave. Kennedy). Botanical Garden is 5 minutes from Ave. Kennedy, there. If you take Avenida Lincoln from the Malecon you will pass Johnny Rockets Restaurant, Supermercado Nacional, Adrian Tropical Restaurant, Mitre Restaurant, Holiday Inn Hotel (rooftop pool), Lincoln Road Restaurant, La Barrica Bar, a small fancy restaurant. At Lincoln and Kennedy, IKEA there, Diamond Mall (free wifi) and Galeria 360 Mall as well as Agora Mall. Subway station at Lincoln and Kennedy. Alamo/National rental car office a few blocks north of Kennedy on Ave. de Los Próceres. Nice homes front the Botanical Garden.

Ingenio Boca de Nigua was a favorite "interrogation" location for Trujillo's henchmen back in the day. Lots of neighbors have live there for decades, and can tell you lots of stories about gunshots and screams.
One of Trujillos "Villas" is just down the road.
Great shot of Ave. Anacaona before the towers!

Some great shots of what Santo Domingo looked like when I first arrived.
The military barracks are now the "Feria Ganadera", as you probably already know. Lots of the "modernistic" condos on Anacaona are still there, but developers are really trying to get their hands on that real estate. Big $$$$$.
All of the major intersections on 27 Feb at Maximo Gomez, Lincoln and Churchill all had roundabouts with statues. All of those pretty much disappeared in the early 80's.
Notice how Lincoln and Churchill were both pretty much devoid of construction. I keep saying it doesn't seem so long ago, but 4 decades is a long time.

Yeah. The one up on the hill. There's another one next to the old sugar mill that's a little smaller and in better condition. It even has a pool (in pretty bad shape)
There's also another one in San Cristobal called the casa de caoba, that was a cement frame and the rest made primarily of Mahogany. It wasn't a particularly nice looking house, and is an empty shell now. It was his favorite house in San Cristobal, (he was coming from there the night he was assassinated).
The legend about the house on the hill (el castillo del Cerro) in San Cristobal has it that Trujillo had it built, and when he saw it, didn't like it. He disliked it so much, it's said he never spent a single night there. I think it's been converted to a military training school, or an elementary school. I'm not sure.
