I'm considering flying onto La Romana Airport and then heading to SD and would like to get there without renting a car, preferably by bus.

Anyone know which company or companies have buses that do this route? A guagua would do so directions for a taxi from the airport to the parada with buses/guaguas to SD would be appreciated.

I'd be landing mid afternoon and might also stay a night or 2 in La Romana.

Thanks!

LRM is a nice little airport. Small duty free shop after you get your passport stamped (when arriving). Rental cars are not parked at that airport (seems some are parked in casa de campo about a ten minute drive away, there is a Hertz office at LRM, National/Alamo has their office in casa de campo and can send a worker to LRM).

Taxi fare into La Romana probably $25US (I'll ask an amiga who lives in La Romana for the price). On the main road in La Romana, just about across the street from Le Pusse Car Wash is a gua gua station (near the main traffic light).

There might be a new hotel in la romana. Scores/Klimax had very nice talent the two times I visited years ago (on the main road into la romana, you'll see the sign for scores). Dominicus Beach (Bayahibe) is very nice, around 13 minutes from the airport (new highway then exit onto a nice quiet road with a forest, large National Park there). La Vecchia Caserma, http://www.hotelvecchiacaserma.com/index.php?lang=en , is about 5 minutes from LRM Airport and about a ten minute drive from the beach. Various night life spots in La Romana, motoconochos in La Romana. Jumbo has a Western Union and a pharmacy.

New highway near the LRM Airport and in La Romana. Hotel Bayahibe is OK for the price. AirBnB might have some rentals in Bayahibe. Cadaqués on Playa Dominicus (Bayahibe) has apartment rentals (new, in a gated complex on the water, can be booked on Orbitz, adjacent to about three all inclusive hotels).

A2B transfers might have shared transfers for when you arrive.

Booking.com has various rentals inside the town of La Romana, the area on the water, I haven't visited, my guess probably a 5 minute drive to Jumbo from that area. Closest place to the gua gua station is probably this place (probably built within the last 5 years), http://www.booking.com/hotel/do/la-romana-suites.html on a major street, just down from the main traffic light when you enter the main area of La Romana from the direction of Santo Domingo. Maybe a ten minute walk or less than a 5 minute moto ride to the gua gua station from this lodging and a 5 minute drive to Jumbo from here.

Taxi info, I'll get and post.

I have never been inside Casa de Campo, there are entrances ten minutes or less from the Jumbo in La Romana. Playa Las Minitas with a restaurant, in casa de campo supposedly can be used with a day pass (maybe $25US). Will be closer than bayahibe (dominicus beach), from the Jumbo. http://explorelaromana.com/en/beaches/ Day pass phone number for Las Minitas Beach, (809) 523-2161. Public Beaches in Bayahibe and Dominicus, one adjacent to a Viva All Inclusive Hotel.

From the La Romana gua gua station you can probably get an express to San Pedro de Macoris (there might ones that go directly to Santo Domingo). In San Pedro de Macoris there is a good size gua gua station on the main road, not far from the monument and the bridge. You may have to change gua guas in San Pedro de Macoris or maybe your gua gua will make a stop there. There are express gua guas from San Pedro de Macoris to Santo Domingo (cost maybe around 100 pesos). Some gua guas from San Pedro de Macoris let off passengers near Park Independencia (near the beginning of zona colonial and not far from Gazcue). Other gua guas are just north of zona colonial, near Park Enriquillo.

The new highway from La Romana has an exit and on ramp in front of the entrance to the LRM Airport. The old two lane road runs adjacent to the new highway there. From the airport terminal, you could potentially walk to the old road and wait for a passing gua gua. Some gua guas use the new highway.

From La Romana you can take a gua gua in the direction of Higuey for Bayahibe and get off at the side road that leads to Bayahibe (there is a grassy triangle spot near where that side road begins, where people wait for gua guas). Once in Bayahibe, you can take a motoconcho, five minutes to get to the public beach in Dominicus, which is nice. There is a small public beach to the left of the Captain Kidd restaurant in Bayahibe (when facing the restaurant), about five blocks, walk east and you will see a non-paved road, turn right, some small rental boats are stored on land, walk past those boats (bit of an open field there), walk on the dirt road toward the Sea and a little to the left and you will come to that small beach.

A few massage places near the Viva All Inclusive Hotels in Dominicus. Also an open air Italian Restaurant, run by people from Italy, had pizza there with a glass of red wine. Public beach in Dominicus has a restaurant and bar. About 3/4 of a block up from one of the Viva All Inclusive Hotels, is a small grocery/bakery/liquor store.

Villa Iguana, their site has photos of some of the roads with directions, rates from $35US for two people with breakfast; http://www.villaiguana.de/map.htm . Penthouse with a pool and apartments also available.

From their webpage:

"From Airport La Romana to Bayahibe

Most comfortable is by taxi - approx. 20 US$. Tell the driver that you want to go to the genuine village Bayahibe, otherwise you could end up in the huge resorts which they also call Bayahibe. All taxi drivers have mobil phones, so it will be a good idea if you have our phone number with you and the driver could call us, if he doesn't know how to find us.

Alternate you can travel by public bus. Leave the airport and walk to the road ( 1/4 mile ), cross it and on the opposite side of the road ( driving to east ) stop a public bus with a hand signal. There are no bus stops. The buses, called guaguas stop everywhere along the road where somebody gives a sign. This buses are are small ones for 12 pax, not always have a sign which shows their route. You have to get in the bus to Bayahibe ( about 2 US$ ).

The bus is going to Bayahibe. Here is a bus stop which is only 1 min to walk from our house."

When exiting the La Romana Airport, with the airport to your back, when you are at the main road, with the new highway straight ahead, facing you, to your right will be the direction for the town of La Romana (west), also the direction for San Pedro de Macoris, Juan Dolio, Boca Chica and Santo Domingo. To your left (east) will be the direction for Bayahibe, Boca de Yuma, Higuey, Punta Cana and Bavaro.

As of December, 2013, I was told not to pay more than 150 pesos for a taxi inside the town of La Romana.

Alto Rango I was told is a good disco. Marinelly, Urban and Tony bars are still open. Urban for big ass bartenders. Marinelly Cafe is a nice place a few blocks up from Jumbo.

I was told is still open and is open late, you can go there with an amiga if you like and watch the other women dance. Had an indoor and outdoor bar, when I visited years ago, with a swimming pool. I believe they used to have a sports book there, where you could bet on U.S. sports, not sure if they still have that.

Nice bar just south of Park Duarte, same street had a Dominos Pizza. The bar had an interior courtyard that was open to the sky. Also Marinelly has an inside courtyard with a small pool (when I visited years ago). Profesionales was a fun small bar, it might have a new name.

This number is probably better for Dino Taxi in La Romana, 809 550-5060, a chica called and was told 300 pesos, from the airport to in front of Jumbo in La Romana.

Supermarket and Department Store, sells clothes (including bikinis), electronics, bottles of alcohol (wine, beer, whisky, rum, vodka etc.). Burger King and other places for food. Claro and Orange offices (probably others). February 2013, a Claro sim card at the Claro office in Jumbo cost 160 pesos (not sure if minutes were included, I use Aryty.com or Ezetop.com to add minutes to a DR cell number with a debit or credit card). Pharmacy in Jumbo that sells Pfizer Viagra, Lilly Cialis and generic versions over the counter no prescription. ATM machines in Jumbo. Western Union in the Jumbo in La Romana, to change money. Jumbo in San Pedro de Macoris has a Radio Shack.

Near La Caleta Beach in the town of La Romana, I was told for seafood. Also Boca de Yuma for seafood, over 30 minutes from La Romana going east, past Bayahibe (also cattle ranches on the way to Boca de Yuma).

The gua-gua station is located next to the Shell/Burger KING (there is only 1 in La Romana). The fare to Santo Domingo is about 200RD if i remember correctly. It leaves approximately every 2 hours. :)_

Starting from about $30US per night, includes taxes, for two people, looks nice, in Bayahibe, gets good reviews. http://www.booking.com/hotel/do/taino-accomodation.html

National Car Rental is about $42US per day (includes Glass/Tire and 3rd Party Liability Insurance), for a Chevrolet Aveo, in La Romana, in January 2014.
