This place is fairly new and on one of the corners by the little Playero store. I saw an online ad for dinner yesterday. Two 3 piece fried chicken dinners with fries, slaw and a drink for 499 pesos. Dinner for two for 499 pesos? Why not give it a try. Chica and I went yesterday evening. Menu said taxes included but not tip.

The dinner was fine. No issues there. But when the bill came it was for 650 pesos. The two dinners were listed as one 499 peso item. Chica had ordered a fruit punch and I had a coke. The coke was listed separately at an additional 50 pesos so apparently you get two dinners but only one drink with the 499 peso special. Odd. That brings the bill to 550 pesos. Since the menu states taxes are included what was the other 100 pesos for?

I didn't bother to ask. I won't be going back.

I had the all you can eat pancakes there for 190 pesos. They were good. The Dominican breakfast was especially good as well. How ever the prices are on the higher end. Service was pretty bad. Asked por pineapple juice got chinola. When I told the waitress she laughed. Then she forgot my bacon as well. Then laughed again. She is a cute little blonde with a huge rack. So I laughed as well. I can get good service from ugly waitresses at home. I'll take dumb blonde with big tits anyday. :).

Met her on my last trip... Mayte.. or something like that was her name...
I gave her credit for trying with the service... but she didn't know the ropes as it was supposedly her first day...

Food was above average in price.... ok in quality...

Spot to chica watch the girls heading to the beach or leaving.... worth it imho

There are more than enough spots that are good to watch the chicas that serve a good meal.

My first experience with Lazy Dog not the best and not sure if I would go back or not

One of the newly opened places in town. Not sure what was in it previously sure the long timers would know the name of it

It is now kinda a open air sandwich type of place that also specializes in fried chicken

Not to bad a menu

I thought about a burger but most burgers I have had in the DR I have not really liked to much
I just don't like the taste of most of them

I settled on a clubhouse sandwich.
The ingredients sounded good to me but the sandwich was a big time fail.
Didn't even bother taking a pic

Cheap cheese, the bread was not toasted, they used small broken pieces of bacon . It could have been a great sandwich but it just was not prepared well. :icontd:

Oh and the papa fritas were soft and soggy. Not cooked properly.

At least the cole slaw was good.

Perhaps I should have tried the specialty chicken.

Lazy Dog is a Canadian (?) franchise operation run by these guys http://islandhospitalityconcepts.com/index.php.

They have 4 places in Cabarete and one in Las Terrenas along with this newish Sosua operation.

The ones in Cabarete are very popular and I have eaten many times at the Lazy Dog Roadside Grill in Cabarete. The burgers are the best I have had since Las Locos changed recipe a few years back.

There is 20% expat only discount card available from their website for food purchases.

The 4 in Cabarete all have a slightly different theme but under the same management concept.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=119853&d=1431541306

I assume an advantage is that they can use their collective corporate purchasing power to maintain supplier reliability and reasonable costs.

BTW..Cabarete has expanded quite a bit since you last came here. It now takes 18 minutes and 37 seconds to walk end to end.

I am not sure it is really that bad.
I do know that the cook there that particular day made one of the worst club sandwiches I have ever had.

I think others have remarked that the burgers and the chicken are quite tasty so perhaps I should have picked something different.

A overcharged bill is not much of a surprise as it happens all over the place.

Sure it's not the first time Seville had a bill that wasn't correct.

Consistency of the staff can certainly make a huge difference in how a place is viewed that's for sure.

I have had meals at Balonga that have been wonderful and others that have been so bad I swore I would never return but the I do and the next one was good again. I chalk that up to staff and management monitoring the quality of the food and service.

I would bet there are a rather large percentage of bills there that are not exactly correct.

I pretty much have an expectation of what they should be each time and if they are within reason I don't make a fuss but as you all know from my prior reports I have been known to make a fuss over a bill in the past

supposedly they have the best burger in Cabarete. However anyone can make the claim, who knows if it is really true. I haven't tried one there so I can't comment.
Some day I will try the Lazy Dog in Sosua, but there are so many choices there it could be a while.

I thought I would give this place a second chance so i stopped in for lunch
I will get to the food shortly but there is an issue going on with the bills in this place

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y529/j_d66/dr%20may%202015/A26AACC4-910C-459E-840F-6ED79A1E00D4_zpsmmbuch1p.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/j_d66/media/dr%20may%202015/A26AACC4-910C-459E-840F-6ED79A1E00D4_zpsmmbuch1p.jpg.html)

Here is my bill and the total looked high to me as well so I added it up and guess what.

The total only comes to 1,209.94 but you can see the total on the bill is 1,427.73

The difference is 18% which also happens to be the 8% tax plus the 10% service.

I new something was haywire because I new the chicken dinner was 249 RD on the menu same as what was on the bill.
But it looks like the drinks are priced net of the 18%

So are they ripping people off, perhaps they are when they indicate tax is included on the menu which I seem to remember being the case as well.
But I didn't feel like going back and asking for the menu this day to confirm or deny it.

I also did not bother making an issue of it with the waitress as I new it would go no where since she seemed to only know espanol so trying to explain to her why the bill did not add up would be futile.

It certainly seems deceptive or inept management practices to have a bill that does not add up

It also makes food that appears to be competitively priced actual end up being a little overpriced when you compare it to other establishments that include the tax and/or service in the menu price

Oh and the difference between 550 and 650 just happens to be an additional 18% so looks like it's not a random thing going on here

j_d66
06-09-2015, 02:33 AM
now for the food

I decided to play it safe this time and go for the items that appear to be their specialty

So I ordered the 3 piece chicken dinner

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y529/j_d66/dr%20may%202015/5EA75E94-8EE4-44AE-95A8-59D10F72F3D9_zpsvmfao7bb.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/j_d66/media/dr%20may%202015/5EA75E94-8EE4-44AE-95A8-59D10F72F3D9_zpsvmfao7bb.jpg.html)

What a disappointment. The chicken was small and dry. I think it was fried to long as well as it was dark.
One thing I have always been impressed with in the DR is they know how to cook chicken here and it has been good most everywhere that I have had it.

The fries again were soggy like last time. NO bueno

At least the cole slaw was tasty

I also thought I would hedge my bet and order a slider as it was advertised as a smaller version of their famous roadside burger.

They happened to have them on special this day for 49RD so I ordered one to try

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y529/j_d66/dr%20may%202015/5B0CD9BC-5918-4FE2-8643-1470EE579388_zpsse3m9kkf.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/j_d66/media/dr%20may%202015/5B0CD9BC-5918-4FE2-8643-1470EE579388_zpsse3m9kkf.jpg.html)

Well something got lost in translation because my order of 1 slider special at 49RD turned into the normal 3 slider menu item for 199RD
But I didn't complain about it mostly because the 3 slider menu item also came with deep fried pickles :iconTU:

Well the burgers were a huge let down as well.

They also were dry and way to salty for my tastes.

I have developed an aversion for salt and don't really care for it in my meals but these burgers were way salty yet tasteless if that makes sense.
and so dry I could barely choke down one of them.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y529/j_d66/dr%20may%202015/595D3419-2483-40CB-B2F2-4685D8088A3D_zpse48n1n0c.jpg (http://s1279.photobucket.com/user/j_d66/media/dr%20may%202015/595D3419-2483-40CB-B2F2-4685D8088A3D_zpse48n1n0c.jpg.html)

On the bright side the deep fried pickles were pretty good although I never seen them prepared with pickle chips before only in the spear format.

Oh the ice tea was good as well if that's a consolation.

So after two trips here I would have to give this place 2 thumbs down for the food.

There might be something good that they make here but I have not been lucky enough to have been served it yet and I doubt I will bother trying to find out if a third time is a charm.

Plus I don't much care for the deception on the bill.
Call me a nit picker but I think the bill should actually add up :dontknow:

Mr. Smooth

So with the thumbs down on the food, and inaccurate or overcharged bills given to the customers, I guess it's safe to say that The Lazy Dog apparently also employs a lazy chef and a lazy cashier.

Being involved with working Dominicans can be a frustrating experience. I have to keep my employees trained to certain standards and follow certain procedures.

They will do something every day for 3 months, then just stop doing it one day. Not to see if I say something; only because it's easier not to do it.
Then they get upset when I call them out on it.

There's a Burger King next to my house. The employees there have timers and procedures to cook food a certain way each time. I don't know how many times I've been there and watched one of the employees cook fries or Onion rings, and pull them out of the oil every minute or so to see if they're cooked or not. Ask them why they don't use the timer, and they'll say stuff "doesn't cook long enough". They cook it until they think it "looks" right.

My biggest aggravation with them? They have a continuous survey going on. Fill out a survey on line, get a code, write it on the back of your receipt, and get a free whopper the next time you go.

On the back of the receipt, it says you have 30 days from the date of purchase to get your whopper. (The code changes every month at the beginning of the month.)

If you go on the 29th, do the survey and get a code and go back on the 1st of the next month, they say it's not valid. If you show them the receipt that says 30 days from date of purchase... they say the receipt is wrong because the code changes on the first of the month. WTF?

That's why food comes out of the kitchen just fine one day, then a month later, it sucks. Nobody is watching them, and is trusting them to do it right.

That is all true with my experience here and my various tenants with restaurants. In any business here the owner has to be watching the food, the supplies coming in and going out and the money. The owner needs to remind employees what to do every day or they sit their staring out into space after a while and sit down and do nothing. There are exceptions of course. When one finds a good employee and sometimes it takes time, the business owner needs to try hard to keep those people. I know of a few restaurants that are doing consistent good food, but in most cases the owner(s) are there most of the time and interacts with the customers to get feedback.

Was Seville running the restaurant where you asked for a large fish and they brought you a large fish and charged you more? Obviously it was a miscommunication between some restaurant and yourself and you reacted poorly. Did Seville act like an idiot when this happened? Seville is an honest person and you are not. You should drop this because you are in the wrong.

My very good recollection was that he put his big nose in the middle of it well after I left Sosua and I reviewed the beach restaurant very truthfully. Just like you are sticking your face in this!!
I said what I had to say, and that's it!! I damn sure have a good memory, and never will I bite my tongue!!
