Camaro’s overview of Gazcue May 2015

Although I live in Puerto Plata now I found airfares to be less expensive flying into Santo Domingo, therefore I will be spending more time there before and after my trips. Recently I spent some time in Gazcue and I would like to submit this report for your review.

Gazcue is one of the oldest sectors of Santo Domingo and is considered to be a tourist area where you can find many extranjeros. The area has several hotels modern & old apartments along with residential dwellings. This part of Santo Domingo reminded me of Poblado in Medellin, Milflores in Lima Peru and Recoletta in Buenas Aires Argentina. The area is also known for its high end casa de citas along with streetwalkers.

This report will not be a comprehensive view of the entire area of Gazcue it will simply cover the area from Avenida George Washington, Avenida Pasture and Avenida Indepencia.

Avenida George Washington

Avenida George Washington travels east and west on the south side of the city providing a view of the Carribean Sea. At the intersecton of Avenida George Washington and Avenida Pasture there is the following:

Torre Veirmar Apartments

Torre Veirmar Apartments are private residences the property appears to be relatively new with contemporary designs.
Crown Plaza Hotel

The Crown Plaza Santo Domingo is a high end hotel at the corner that faces Avenida George Washington.

Avenida Pasture

Avenida Pasture travels north from Avenida George Washington to Avenida Indepencia.
Casa de Citas

Sky High Lounge
Bar LA21

Hotel Shakey (Apartments)

Hotel Shakey Aparthotel is on Avenida Pasture just off Avenida George Washington. Some of the rooms have an ocean view and others have a city view. The ocean view rooms are more expensive but overall the room are very nice.
The receptionist walks you to your room but does not help with the bags. When you walk in there is a living room and dining room area to your left a small kitchenette with a gas stove and refrigerator. You continue to find a guest bathroom without a shower the master bedroom with a queen size bed closet and flat screen television. There is also a master bath with shower etc.
The apartment is very clean and most everything has an egg shell neutral color. The TV and cable work well but I had connection problems with the WIFI so I used my Orange hotspot. The other complaint I had was there was no microwave which is very important for heating left overs but asi es la vida.
My intention is to visit different hotels on my Santo Domingo excursions but I can readily see getting stuck in the place on more than one trip.

Hotel Mystic

Hotel Mystic is on the same side of the street as Hotel Shakey. I have never stayed there but it is reported to be a great chica friendly hotel option for less than $50.00 a night. I will try to investigate further on one of my next Santo Domingo excursions.

Avenida Indepencia

Avenida Indepencia travels east west parallel with Avenida George Washington to the south connected by Avenida Pasture which travels north south.

Manolo’s Restaurante

Manolo’s is on Avenida Indepencia west of Avenida Pasture. I did not eat at Manolo’s this trip but in the past the food and the staff was great. This open air venue provides a great place to people watch and the food is nothing short of fantastic.

Hotel Riazor

Hotel Riazor is on the same side of the street as Manolo’s Restaurante. I have never stayed there but I have heard some good reviews so it will be on my radar for future trips.

Club 305 Hotel

Club 305 Hotel is a high end casa de cita on the same side of the street as Manolo’s restaurant east of Avenida Pasture. I chose not to spend 4000 pesos and hour this trip.

Bodega Indepencia

Bodega Indepencia is a colmado that sells alcohol and refreshments. It is on the same side of the street as Club 305. There are tables and chairs outside and it is a local hangout for people in the area. There are reportedly freelancers available during different times of the week especially during the weekends.

Villar Hnos

At the intersection of Avenida Indepencia and Avenida Pasture is a staple of Gazcue. Villas Hnos has a cafeteria style restaurant a bakery and a separate outdoor café next to the cafeteria. The cafeteria provides modestly prices food and is almost always busy any time of day.
The café is more upscale than the cafeteria and is an outdoor venue with a very classy vibe and efficient wait staff. I would consider it a 4 star restaurant and if you are not careful you can spend 1500 pesos easy for dinner however the food is great.

Hotel Duque Wellington

Hotel Duque Wellington is next door to Villas Hnos café and appears to be an obscure small time hotel. I did not visit but perhaps I will investigate further in the future.

Navarro Hotel & Restaurant

The Navarro Hotel Restaurant is on the same side of the street as Hotel Duque Wellington. I used the hotel as a short time venue about 2 years ago and I was not impressed with the towels and small rooms. I may visit again in the future to see if anything has changed. I have not eaten at the restaurant so I cannot comment.

Closing thoughts

I saw freelance street walkers during my stay but since I was preoccupied I did not partake. They usually walk or stand in the area of Avenida Indepencia between Malolo’s and the Navarro Hotel as well as congregate at the Bodega.'

My major complaint is because this a major tourist area there are many touts trying to get paid. If you hear someone say “hey my fren” trust me he wants to get paid for being an unofficial guide so to speak. I find them more annoying than harmful. They could be trying to rob you instead for the most part they are street hustlers who can help you find anything you want if you know what I mean.

Conclusion

I love this area for the restaurant options alone and the lodging options are more than acceptable also. The area is comfortable for many extranjeros because many people speak English due to it being a tourist area.

I walked around at night but I was very aware of my surroundings at no point did I feel unsafe and there was an occasional police presence in the area. I will definitely return to check out some of the hotel options that I have yet to experience.

Miraflores, you say?

I had three TDY trips to Lima, teaching my Aeronautical Cartography course at the Servicio Aerofotografico Nacional at Las Palmas Air Base in Barranco, and staying in Miraflores. (Once up by Parque Kennedy, twice at the Marriott across from Larcomar.) Unfortunately, that was all before my mongering years, and I was too protective of my security clearance to venture anything with the local chicas.

Ah, well, the missed opportunities ... now I'm retired and my clearance is ancient history.

Thanks for the reminder, as I raise a glass of Brugal 1888 in appreciation.

Tgunz and I stayed there and it was good... IIRC it's somewhere from 40-50 bucks a night including free buffet Dominican style breakfast. Not too many tourists there. There are usually families of residents staying and some locals. They have a pool and food/drinks... Most importantly, chica friendly!

Memories... The first trip I ever took out of the US, JFK-SDQ in Dec 2002 and I stayed at Melia... My friend and I didn't know shit and we winged it... Melia was NOT chica friendly (at least when I was there) but we managed to pay off the security guard to get chicas in.. A few houses consisted of most of our action on that short trip...

The Nicolas de Ovando is my favorite Santo Domongo Hotel. Luxury on a budget!
My last trip to the capital I got a room for under $100 using Priceline Vacation Packages.
I was also surprised that the hotel was chica friendly as I expected to pay an additional fee.

Have you looked into Airbnb, or flipkey? For less than what you'd pay for a hotel, you can rent a real nice apartment, in a great neighborhood of SDQ. I have my own place, and yet my last 3 trips to SDQ, I've gone the apartment rental route, because I can't get over how many great apartments, you could find in amazing neighborhoods for up to $30 dollars a day less, than staying at a hotel.

https://www.flipkey.com/santo-domingo-condo-rentals/p344485/

This is the place I stayed at in November, and where I'll be staying at in two weeks during my next trip to SDQ. The renter is a little airheaded so some of the details of the apartment are wrong, but none that really matter, just details that would make the apartment more appealing. It's a 3 bedroom apartment not two for example, and his rate is $68 dollars a night. It was a sound system, washer & dryer, security 24/7, hot water all the time, the fastest residential high speed internet I've ever seen in the DR, and most of all the location is prime real estate. It's within 5 blocks all 3 major universities in SDQ, across the street from a casino/hotel, right next to the train station, tons of points of interest within 5 - 15 minutes via car. Places like this for me, are sooooo much better than a hotel. The only issue is that the renter has to answer to the owner of the building, so he has made it very clear no hookers, or girls dressed like hookers. He's had issues with renters in the past bringing back working girls, and the people who live in the apartment building have complained, so if she looks to much like a hoe, I was told take her to the cabana.

I would rather stay here, than a hotel any day of the week.

I didnt want to trash mitch on the internet cause i am sure his apartments are cool, but his service and attitude was very shitty. I spend the week trying to track him cause dmoney rents from him so i figured i would keep the money in the same circle. I after finally settling a place, and method of payment i got to SDQ and he forgot about by trip/dates/times. He told me to wait me 1 hour until his guy gets there, I told him NO, 1hr is 3hrs in dominican time. He begged me to wait and he will get there in a hour. I told him it takes me 30minutes to get there from the airport so I will give him 15minutes when i get there.

He gets there, starts his snob story, he started treating me like he was doing me a favor and its a privilege to stay there. I was passive aggressive cause i just want to get there and take a shower, RD is fucking hot. He kept patronizing me so i just left and got a taxi. He called me a asshole, LOL

Hanzo, i know Dmoney and you rent from him but i wouldn’t ever do business with him.

The dudes first name is Mitch Elbiali and his company manages the rental of lots of places in RD (flipkey and airbnb). Remember you renting the apartment and also doing business with 3 party so things might not go as planned

I have a friend staying there now, it's a motel type of place. Simple, clean and chica friendly. Even if you're not a guess you can sit out font and order drinks from the lounge.

I notice a sign out front that said $40 per night, but that's a very small room and I think they have only one or two of those.

Hotel Casana Dorada Calle Osvaldo Baez Santo Domingo

Hotel Casana Dorada is in the Gascue área of Santo Domingo right around the corner of Bodega Indepencia off Avenida Indepencia. The hotel has very few parking spaces for those who have cars so it is possible you might have to park on the street.

When I arrived I discovered the hotel was being renovated and there was scaffolding in different parts of the hotel. They advertised a functional pool however the pool was have full of water and unusable for swimming.
I had a decent room with good air-conditioning it had a king size bed and plenty of towels in the bathroom. There was a room safe however it another monger monger reported that his was not working. There was no mini bar but there was a functional refrigerator. I did not use the TV or the WIFI so I cannot speak on those 2 items. I did see a creepy crawler (roach) while I was in the room despite the fact it was very clean.

The hotel is in a good location because you can walk to convenient stores and restaurants in the area. The staff was good and everyone was polite and courteous but I doubt if I would repeat since there are so many other hotel options in the Gazcue area.

Hotel Riazor Avenida Indepencia, Santo Domingo

Hotel Riazor is in the Gascue area of Santo Domingo on Avenida Indepencia about a 5 minute walk west of Villar Hnos Restaurant. When you walk on to the property there is a small parking area however it is only sufficient for a few cars however there is a parking area adjacent to Manolo’s Restaurant next door.

The lobby area is small with a front desk and a few couches and chairs. I walked in off the street without a reservation and was able to get a basic room without a balcony. I found the room to be immaculate. The room was accented with hard wood floors and wood trim closets and doors, although it was a hotel room it had a very homey feel. The queen size bed had a very comfortable mattress. There was a large closet with a key safe and the bathroom was clean very spacious and had plenty of towels.

There are regular rooms with 1 & 2 beds and balcony rooms which are more expensive with 1& 2 beds. The room I had a flat screen 20 inch television and the cable worked well. There was WIFI but I cannot attest to the connectivity because I used my Orange hotspot. There was a mini bar with items to include candy, chips and various alcoholic beverages that if used were paid for at departure.

I found the staff to be very professional and courteous some spoke English and some only spoke Spanish. Although I only stayed for 1 night that stay was enjoyable and I would have no problems recommending this hotel to others.

Manolo’s Restaurant Avenida Indepencia, Santo Dominigo

Manolo’s Restaurant is on Avenida Indepencia next to Hotel Raizor. The restaurant is an open air venue which faces Avenida Indepencia where you can see the foot and auto traffic. It is not uncommon to see some fine chicas walking by some working and some not.

The main part of the restaurant is open air but there is an indoor air-conditioned dining area also. The restaurant is famous for its mixed fruit drinks that are prepared fresh before your eyes. The menu includes typical steak and seafood as well as Dominican Comida Tipica. Menu items average between 300-500pesos. The food is good with decent sized portions. I had “pollo guisado” and I asked the waiter for all thighs because the thigh is my favorite part of the chicken but he came back with thighs and legs, but that is the second time that has happened to me although at a different restaurant, oh well “bienvienidos a La Republica Dominicana!”

IMHO the best part about the restaurant is the staff who have always been professional and friendly. I love this restaurant and I would highly recommend it to others.

One other thing to add is that is a direct shot to the back entrance of hotel/casino jaragua. You can attempt to pick off girls waiting for the public transit after work. I start 'dating' a girl that works there so i passed thru a few times and saw streams of cuties in and out.

I like gambling so thats a plus for me

Hotel Mystic Avenida Pasture, Santo Domingo

Hotel Mystic is a dated property however I like the way it is set up. There is a balcony with chairs so you can watch foot traffic after which you walk in to the front entrance. The receptionist is on your right and there is a sitting area with couches and a TV. This are is great for interviews if you do not want to immediately bring a chica to your room.

As you continue on the first floor there is a bar and restaurant. There are different types of rooms but I got a large room with a small table chairs couch and king size bed. The room was obviously dated but very comfortable. There was a flat screen TV and safe in the wall. My biggest complaint would be there was no refrigerator or mini-bar.

I had no reservation but I was able to secure a room with no problem.
