Camaro in 2017

I am grateful for what turned out to be a successful 2016. I am beginning my third year living in the Dominican Republic and I have learned much during this time. Many of the things I read or heard others talking about have become "rhema" to me. It's one thing to hear or read something it's an entirely different thing to witness what you read or heard spoken right before your eyes.

It's like I have been in school the last 2 years, not only have I had to learn another language but another culture that is based on different societal norms. For me visiting the Dominican Republic for a week at a time a half dozen times a year and living here full time has given me a different perspective. I have learned much but there are 2 things that strike me most profoundly.

#1

It is painfully obvious to me that the Dominican education system is poor by United States standards. My Spanish is still terrible but I often write, read and speak Spanish (Castillian)better than some adult Dominicans that I have interaction with. I recently came across the below

It is bad news when less than 20% of the people who have graduated from high school have sufficient skills to get a decent job or successfully complete a course of higher education because education is tied to their earning ability. There are numerous threads on the internet that speak to the situation of education in the Dominican Republic but apparently President Medina is attempting to turn things around.

Along with education is the employment situation. I have read unemployment statistics depending on the sources from 15 -30%. I am grateful for Facebook because it has given me a much broader spectrum of women to interact with other than what would commonly be found in Sosua. Based on speaking with many of them it appears as if unemployment is closer to 50% maybe more.

Not only do I have I seen a great deal of unemployment I have also seen a lack of ambition. I cannot count how many times I asked a woman what she wants to do with her life and she has been remiss to give me an answer. I have often received answers such as own a salon or clothing store. I have met a few women who were educated and gainfully employed but not many; it is not that they do not exist it is that I have yet to penetrate those social circles.

Below is an old article it is detailed but it basically talks about the minimum and living wage in the Dominican Republic

http://ciee.typepad.com/files/wrc-li...republic-2.pdf (http://ciee.typepad.com/files/wrc-living-wage-analysis-for-the-dominican-republic-2.pdf)

Basically if the average Dominican is working they earn between 6000 - 20,000 pesos a month. Obviously there are some who earn more or less but the aforementioned is just an estimate. One of the primary motivations for work is the amount of money you earn if you take away that incentive some choose not to work and others choose to work outside the system. Working outside the system includes criminal activity for some of the men and prostitution for some of the women.

The point is...

I now see up close why so many women are available here in the Dominican Republic as opposed to the United States. The fact is I would not be able to do 10% of what I do for the cost of which I do it because of the education and employment situation. I have personally discovered that if you treat the majority of these women decently and you are in a position to help them financially there is no reason to be alone.

I often have this conversation with my wingman and after 20 years of traveling to DR I find there is a certain lack of respect for foreigners...

It seems like the local females have more respect for the local men that beat on them and treat them poorly than they would for psriches or myself.

I have met a few exceptions to the rule but for the most part there is no respect...

Actually you are correct and I should have used the word "some" instead of "majority" I have had some of the same experiences with Dominican women being disrespectful. I would like to contribute that to the aforementioned lack of education however I believe there are some cultural things that are much deeper and I have yet to comprehend.

Facebook

In the past I used Dominican & Latin American Cupid extensively, I never had much luck with tagged and Badoo. I like Facebook because it has given me the opportunity to meet a diversity of women. Although I have met quite a few women it is not as easy as it looks. I go through a lot of rejections and some of my meetings simply don't come to fruition.

Recently I have been meeting a few fat women proving that no system is perfect...lol.

Exactly...

It's education and experience Camaro.

They are just not sophisticated enough to understand how to interact in some social venues.

RFM

I met a small petite chic who was my type on Facebook and had a meet and greet with her at one of the bars on the Malecon in Puerto Plata. She had the typical features that I would normally be attracted to.

I didn't get the vibe she was a pro so we simply talked and I put her in que for potential consideration in the future. A few weeks later I received the below listed Facebook conversation

So a chic I only met one time and have not had sex with actually wants me to give her 25,000 pesos...uhmmmm that's over $500.00...yikes! WTF! 1 or 2000 pesos maybe but 25,000 pesos? How do you fix your mouth to ask an absolute stranger for $500.00? I kept asking "en serio?"

In reference to the education & employment issue in the Dominican Republic I guess this is one of the results. As I can recall she was a dancer at Ocean World but for some reason she lost her job. The same issues that make these chics available to me are the same issues that would lead them to make what I considered to be an outlandish request.

Surprisingly for the number of chics I deal with I recently have not been receiving very many RFM's in fact there have been very few but I wanted to share this one since it was so unusual.

Of course being the concerned gentleman that I am I enquired as to what was wrong and she said nada. Then the next day she posted the below meme on her WhatsApp.

Needless to say I was attracted to her and I was interested in making the excursion. I arrived to discover she wanted to go to lunch with a friend of hers. I was not alarmed by the prospect because chaperoning (going out with family and friends) is quite common amongst civilian chics outside tourist areas.

After our lunch date which was in Monti Cristi about 30 minutes from Dajabon we arrived in my hotel. She later informed me that she wanted to go out that night this time with her friends. There were going to be 3 chicas I was supposed to be buying drinks for. My concern was she was yawning on the drive back from our lunch date as if she was tired and I believed that after a night of drinking she might not be interested in my dessert. I aborted because I felt she was playing games and returned to Puerto Plata the next day.

The below meme is currently circulating on Facebook

http://i1301.photobucket.com/albums/ag110/camaro1257/2017-a/IMG-20170103-WA0073_zpsdsxwxw3a.jpg (http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/camaro1257/media/2017-a/IMG-20170103-WA0073_zpsdsxwxw3a.jpg.html)

Basically this guy has gone out with this chica and her friends and spent money on drinks and hookah and guess what?????????? GUESS? The chic is tired and doesn't want to give him his dessert...hmmmmmmmmmmm sounds familiar.

I have spoken with another ex-pat who lives here and he advised that this practice is quite common so I consider myself fortunate I dodged the bullet. For those who entertain civilian - non pros in the future be aware if she wants to go out on the town with her friends you might get dessert at the end of the night or you might not...

I have no personal experience with this crazy shit whatsoever. However, from what I have seen and read, this seems more like a "cutter" rather than a suicide attempt. Again, no experience, but I would expect a potential or attempted suicide would involve a single, or maybe 2 deep cuts to really sever the blood vessels to bleed out.

Either way, I agree, Run Forrest, Run!! :scared::scared::scared: That is definitely a cry for help, but I am NOT on that committee!

I stand corrected

The chic that posted the meme with several cuts was not a suicide attempt it is something called "cutting" or self harm.

That is exactly their goal
To get sympathy..
They not real cutters .. and they not committing Suicide.. they want you to feel sorry enough for them, to care.. & caring = pesos ..

I would tell them,, “make sure you wipe that blade with rubbing alcohol, so you don’t get an infection” , see what reaction you get from her.

If she laughs , then you know it was all bullshit .. if she gets really angry then it gets a lot more confusing but you can simply run away.

Yes my objective is to share with you guys some of the tings I have been experiencing and I hope what I have shared benefits others. I can do straight PFP with my eyes closed but when you move into the semi and non pro ranks it gets a lot more interesting and definitely more challenging.

However, I will admit that with all my life experience I am still learning which is making the journey more interesting for me.

Kviar is a casino -disco that serves both tourist and locals. It's safe to say that most tourist that frequent the venue do not speak Spanish therefore I do not think you would have any problems any other tourist wouldn't have.

A bigger problem you might have is transportation to and from the venue from Sosua and what to do with the chica once you pull. Some would be willing to go to Sosua some not.

Kviar - Edit with new photos (I went back to Photobucket hopefully it works this time)

Kviar Casino & Disco, Puerto Plata

Kviar - Edit with new photos (I went back to Photobucket hopefully it works this time)

Kviar Casino & Disco, Puerto Plata

Kviar used to be my go to spot when I moved to Puerto Plata but it's kinda played out for me now. It is the premier night spot in Puerto Plata and attracts both locals and tourist. There is a casino and a disco next door. They have special artist occasionally on the weekends and a strip show on Thursdays. There is a mix between regular chics and working girls. If you are attentive you will be able to discern the difference between the two. Many nights there are more men than women, Dominican men love the spot.

Below is a sample of some of the talent that frequent Kviar. It is not unusual for chics to come from Santiago or La Vega and work a while then keep it moving.

Also, I know Elvis' original spot was closed by the City Hall Mafia. I am aware he relocated and reopened on the DL. Does anybody know if the newer spot is still in business?:confused:

Take Hwy 5 outside of Sosua headed towards Cabarette, you will pass Sosua Ocean Village on your left. The next street you turn right it will dead end, at the dead end turn left and continue for about a mile and the venue will be on your left.

Thank you Sensei. Is pricing still the same? I don't remember if overnights were $100 or $150?

Excursion to Santiago

I met a young chic on Facebook is a semi-professional model and she gets an 8 in my book. She really was looking for a novio so I blew her off but she subsequently accepted my terms. We had a couple of dates sex was decent and she turned out to be smart and a decent person.

Since she didn't sweat me for money like so many have I decided to do something nice for her and take her on a day trip with me since I was going to Santiago to shop. Her modeling gigs pay little if anything so she is like many Dominican women without many resources. I figured it would be rude for me to shop and she had nothing so I gave her some money and told her she could shop with it or keep it for herself.

I wanted to go to Las Colinas Mall but she wanted to go to Plaza Lama Super Tienda which is like Wal Mart with food clothing and a cafeteria. It is basically an oversized La Sirena or Jumbo. She wanted to go because she could get items more economical there than at the mall.

She spent half of what I gave her and did not ask for more and I was impressed. Actually I was testing her to see how she would handle the money since she is young and she did well. We had lunch and over all had a decent time together. We stayed the night at Hotel Camp David Ranch and I have written a review below:

Hotel Camp David Ranch, Santiago

Hotel Camp David is reported to be one of ex-President Rapael Trujillo's houses and has since been converted to a hotel. I do not know the exact altitude but I believe it is almost 2000 feet above sea level which makes it pretty cool during the winter months at night with temperatures around 65 degrees.

The view of Santiago puts me in the mind of Medellin, Colombia where there is a similar view. The view at night as well as during the day is spectacular in fact it is one of the greatest attributes of the hotel.

The restaurant has some high end food items like seafood and steak for 1000 pesos a plate. There is a wine menu with 1-3000 pesos items. The food was decent but the service was poor I believe due to a wedding reception being held at the hotel.

Assessment

Hotel Camp David is a very nice hotel I was disappointed in that there was limited parking and on the night I stayed there was a wedding reception so there was live music up until 2am.

This is not a mongering hotel per-se it is really a place that you want to take a special someone for dinner and a nice hotel experience. It is no cheap venue the basic rooms start at 7000 pesos a night and they have suites with mountain views for more. The restaurant also is pricey it would be easy to spend 3-5000 pesos on dinner and drinks depending on what you order.

I saw some stunning women there who were obviously with their dates so it was obvious that some Dominicans not only have money but are enjoying it.

IMHO the best part of the experience is the view of Santiago, it should be noted you can enjoy the restaurant without having a room at the hotel.

My date

We started to get busy and low and behold she started spotting on the sheets. I have tried sex with a chic on menstruation in the past and for me it is simply not enjoyable nor do I think she was interested. The date turned out decent as she is a good companion although she is young she is smart but still has a lot to learn about life.

The future remains to be seen what we will do going forward.

If I may recommend an alternative? Rather than using Photobucket, or some other similar image host, have you considered editing your photos on your computer and then uploading them directly into your post? That's what I do....

Back in Sosua

Most of the chicas I am dealing with now are from Facebook and they live in the Puerto Plata area. They range from non semi and full time pros. When you are dealing with non pros sometimes they are less reliable because there is no direct quid pro quo sex for money so they are late and sometimes do not show up at all. At those times Sosua is on point.

I went to Merengue and had some after which I met a chic I was with a few years ago for 2000 pesos the session was mediocre but she has a very nice flaca body so I decided to try again. I offered her 3000 pesos for 2 leches and she refused said she could only give me 1 leche. She has a very nice body but her face is mediocre she is definitely a 2000 pesos chic but I guess she had a inflated idea of her value, anyways I said...

"quizas puedo verte in otra vez" and walked away from her without looking back and you know what she did???? GUESS??? She deleted me from her WhatsApp ...awwwwwwwwwwwwww...lol!

I ran into another regular who takes 2000 pesos for 2 leches so I decided to knock her out before I headed home.

Sosua Sunset Hotel

Sosua Sunset Hotel is located in between Sosua and Charamecos on just off Hwy 5.

There is a side road off Hwy 5 that leads to the hotel however the signage can be seen from the road. The side road is terrible and was probably damaged by the heavy winter rains. There is a metal gate with the hotel being enclosed within a brick wall.

I arrived at about 2am and there was no office I could see but security got an attendant. There was a pool next to the main building.

I had passed this hotel on many occasions but never visited, I only ended up there on the suggestion of my date because Dulce Secreto was full. The rooms were clean but not as nice as Dulce Secreto's rooms. There were 2 towels and soap for the shower but no condoms like in Dulce Secreto; it was a good thing I had my sex kit in my vehicle with enough condoms for the occasion.

The room I was in was 500 pesos for 3 hours. I ordered a small Presidente Light for my date and it was 150 pesos...YIKES!

Over all it was a decent experience but of course I would have preferred Dulce Secreto but the hotel is an acceptable plan B. I did not ask if it is a regular hotel or just a cabana so I cannot advise on that question.

My date

She gave a good BBBJ and sex was decent but I really didn't enjoy her this time because she was in a hurry to get back out in the street so I let her go and headed home.

Super Bowl 2017 pricing in Sosua.

Sosua is off the chain as usual for Super-Bowl weekend. It should be noted in Puerto Plata I give anywhere between 0-2000 pesos depending on the woman and her situation. Unless I am in a place like Kviar or otherwise high end spot more money is generally not required.

The below listed chic is a Sosua regular who has been on my radar for a while. I have received mixed reported about her so I was curious.

I got mixed reports on her. I saw her at the old casino last year and she wanted 2500 pesos but I wasn't buying. She reached out to me on Facebook so I figured I'd give her a try. Below was my offer:

Basically my offer was BBBJ without condom sex with condom 2000 pesos. If we connected and hit again she'd get an extra 1500 pesos for a total of 3500 pesos. Her response was "no thanks." I am sure the offer will be more attractive after Super-Bowl when slow season hits but by then it will be too late.

There was a time when the norm for TLN was 3000 pesos but now that is too little for about 2 hours of a Sosua chics time. The irony is unless you are in Kviar or some other high end joint the same value in Puerto Plata is not going to cost you 3500 pesos.

The below chic is a Sosua veteran from many years gone by. She is in her 30's great personality and sex. She probably would make a great novia because she is not a hard core puta type. She's another chic I have grown fond of.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=140413&stc=1

I asked her if she was charging crazy prices and she said she would come from Sosua to Puerto Plata TLN for 3000 pesos which has been our deal for the past 3 years. When it was time to come she said she was in Cabarette I let you figure out what she was doing there. She didn't make it and frankly I really can't blame her I can only imagine how much money she got for what she was doing.

I appreciate the fact that she wasn't trying to gouge me and she respected I understanding.

The below chic was a regular of mine pretty decent BBBJ and sex. She has been back and forth between Puerto Plata and Sosua but of course during Super Bowl it's hard for her to resist the lure of big money.

The first time she came from Sosua to Puerto Plata to see me I paid 2500 pesos BBBJ and sex. The subsequent times I paid 2000 pesos. It's Super-Bowl weekend and now she is charging $100.00 for 2 hours and $200.00 TLN.

I asked her what she was going to charge next month during low season when there aren't many tourist and I got...crickets. I should have used "quieres" instead of "quiero" in the last question but she clearly understood what I was saying.

Maybe I am crazy but I can't wrap my head around paying a 2000 pesos chica 4500 pesos just because it's Super Bowl.

***So what exactly is my motive to return to Sosua for someone who lives in Puerto Plata??? ...hanging with friends, boredom and dinner every now and then...

.
I used to have the same problem in that others often could not see pics I had posted that were hosted on isoc as well but I could always see them
There was no rhyme or reason to it either as it wasn't like a certain color like blue as opposed to green blue or purple that could or couldn't see them

Ultimately it was the main reason I started using photobucket.

Incidentally I think there have been some behind the scenes improvements going on at photobucket as of late as I am noticing a little better performance with them and it was getting really slow.

Other than them randomly deleting pics they don't like I really haven't had to many issues with them and the iphone app makes it really easy to upload pics.

I hate and love this country at the same time!

Driving in the Dominican Republic is a very serious endeavor. There are major intersections in cities such as Puerto Plata that do not have traffic signals therefore it's up to you to be able to navigate successfully around moto-conchos, gua guas and every other type of vehicle on the road at the time.

The moto-concho problem is not that bad in Santo Domingo and Santiago but in Puerto Plata it is horrendous. Moto-conchos swarm around to your right left in front and in back. What makes it bad is they weave in and out of traffic with reckless disregard for other traffic.

On my way back to Puerto Plata from my last Santiago trip a moto-concho was right in front of me and BAMMM! Within seconds I was surrounded by inquiring Dominicans. I pulled off the road to check on the moto guy (I have been told to drive off but I felt there were too many people for that so I decided to ride it out) and there was an even greater flood of bystanders than moments before.

Now there are two people I have to deal with the moto driver and the moto owner who just arrived. I tried to talk to the moto driver in private but he kept acting like he didn't want to get up and his leg was injured. He was hurt but I could not tell the extent of the injury. (I had a moto with minor damage and a driver who may or may not have had a broke leg)I was glad the moto owner was there because he was the most reasonable of everyone. I pulled him aside and started to negotiate because the last thing I wanted was to see the police and hospitals etc etc.

I was able to get the owner and the driver away from the crowd and there was one guy who kept trying to interject and I could tell he was going to be a problem so we got him to mind his own business. The owner is trying to get me to take the driver to the hospital and I am not with that for obvious reasons. I made a bunch of excuses why I could not and kept talking money. I was able to get both of them to settle on an amount that was comfortable for everyone and the owner agreed to take the driver to the hospital. The last thing I wanted was to get stuck paying a hospital bill. I left with no further incident.

A week later I am back in Puerto Plata and still have damage to my vehicle.

I was stopped in a local barrio waiting for someone and this guy saw the damage to my vehicle and tried to say I hit a moto-concho friend of his...GTFOOHWTBS! I know I shouldn't have but I kinda yelled at him saying "este es Viejo dano!" and I looked at him like he was crazy! He backed off and said it wasn't me...uhmmmmmmmmmm like yeah yo se...ASS hole!

Now I know I need to quit being so DAYMN lazy and get my car fixed before some idiot tries that garbage again and I am not so lucky. The body man I used the last time did great work but he was too busy so I called one of my moto guys who has been like a concierge for me. If I need anything I tell him he handles it and I give him a few pesos.

We go deep in Barrio San Marco in Puerto Plata to a driveway with a cover which is a make shift body shop and now I have to negotiate with "Gordo" the owner. My guy says he does great work but I am not sure but I know I have to get my truck fixed before I have another situation.

I want to repair the front damage and inside my vehicle the dashboard is cracked and looks like it needs to be replaced, along with one of my door handles was about to fall off. We come to an agreement on the front end but curiously enough everything else I ask him to do will cost me 1000 pesos more...hmmmmmmmm where'd he come up with that number?????????...haaaaaaaaaaa!

So anyways we come to an agreement. Now I have to leave my keys it's going to take about 8 hours to fix everything and I am not comfortable so I leave a spare key. Gordo starts working on my vehicle

GTFOOH...are you serious???????????? So I check the door handle it's working then I check the dash of my car and guess what...GUESS?????????? That sucker looks brand new! You cannot see the seams cracks no NOTHING! What! So my eyes are so big they are going to pop out my head!

Needless to say I tell "Gordo" if I need any other body work he is the MANNNN!

The body work, my dash and fixing my door handle was the equivalent of $150.00. Yes, I am serious! So this whole scenario cost me less than my deductible on my insurance...yessssssssssssssur I am serious as a heart attack!

Honestly sometimes I am so frustrated in this country but then I have fortunate incidents like this one that just make me go "woooooooooooooooooooooow!"

It seems like the local females have more respect for the local men that beat on them and treat them poorly than they would for psriches or myself.

I have met a few exceptions to the rule but for the most part there is no respect...

Personal Anecdote

Once again I am going to state the obious to many, the difference is I am going to put the obvious in my own words. It has occured to me that living in the Dominican Republic and dealing with the women here (and people in general) is like playing a game. Pick your favorite game, whether it be the board game of chess or the Spades card game the fundemental principles are the same. There are two things you need if you are going to win consistantly at any game. First you need to know the rules of the game, second you need to have skill at playing the game, especially when your advesary knows the rules and has skills at the game you are playing.

Men come to the Dominican Republic for different reasons and at different stages of their lives, therefore they have different experiences. The prinicple of understanding the game is still relavent regardless as to your status.

In this game of living in the Dominican Republic it is imperative to understand the culture and how Dominican people think of and percieve extranjeros. Generally, you are either appreciated or resented because it is percieved that you can add some value to their lives indivdually, or the lives of those they care about. Of course their are exceptions to every rule but generally Dominicans will treat extranjeros differentlly than they treat other Dominicans. This can have positive or negative results depending on the individuals involved in the situation.

I reject the notion that all Dominicans are this and all Dominicans are that simply because my experiences have been different with different Dominicans...todas la gente no son iguales. However, one thing remains the same, Dominican people percieve the extranjero differently then they percieve themselves.

Many a man has come to the Dominican Republic and given his heart, money or material things to a Dominican woman only to discover because he did not understand the rules to the game he could not play it with skill, therefore he lost. This does not mean that we cannot have feelings for Dominican women nor does it mean that we cannot be generous how we see fit; what it does mean is we should try to avoid loosing touch of how we are percieved and perhaps we will not loose as often as many who have gone before us.

Personally I am trying to have success at this game by developing tactics and strategies based on how Dominicans percieve me while still being open for the occasional Dominican who is different from the others.

You know you are right, especially talking short term. Sometimes to get the foot in the door on particularly fine ass bitches, I pay a bit more initially. Not a lot more than my initial instinct maybe an extra 500 or even on occasion an extra mil. But then having done that, and getting them a bit addicted to you, cause I am an easy guy, I break it down to my terms, letting them know, I like them, would be willing to break them off a bit every once in a while, but if they would like that, we have to change the terms price wise. Some hem and haw a bit, because they think their pussies have a certain price attached to it, but generally speaking most come around to my way of doing things. Of course short term, really can't do that, you have to be willing to walk away, and they have to realize that, surprising how many are willing to adjust their price.

In the Dominican Republic even when the gringo is right the gringo is wrong!

Recently I was eating dinner on the Malecon in Puerto Plata. I parked my truck in the normal parking spot in front of the restaurant. A moto lost control and struck my truck.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=145072&stc=1

AMET was on scene and I later discovered that the moto driver was teaching a girl how to drive and she lost control striking my struck. She went head first into the truck. Apparently the moto wasn't in bad shape because they both mounted the moto and left the scene.

I asked the AMET officer if I needed a report and he said there was no problem...THERE IS NO PROBLEM????????? Sure there is no problem for you but for me I would later discover the damage was over $1000.00 to get it repaired. Rather than press him for a report and have to go through the claim process with my insurance company and possibly have to wait weeks to get my truck fixed I decided to eat the repair cost and have the truck fixed on my dime.

On my last accident I found a barrio body man that did an excellent job so I went back to him and below is the finished product.

http://news.insearchofchicas.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=145073&stc=1

The barrio body man did in 3 days what may have taken considerably longer had I gone through my insurance. I checked US prices for the job done and I paid approximately 1/3rd of what I would have paid in the United States. I guess all is well that ends well with the exception my bank account was a little lighter.

The biggest impression I had from the incident is that I literally did nothing wrong but I still had to pay. I have heard horror stories of moto's running into cars with hospitals and even fatalities. It's one thing to read about someone else's experience but when you have something happen you can feel and touch what has happened to others.

As always it could have been worse and I was left with the thought...

In the Dominican Republic even when the gringo is right the gringo is wrong!

The damage included a dent to the right rear corner panel and right rear bumper. The major parts needed were the right rear window which has a defroster and the right rear tail light. The parts were not in Puerto Plata and had to be searched for all over the country. The total bill was the equivalent of $1000.00US and 70% of that was parts the rest was labor.

For me in Puerto Plata Maria turned out to be a non-event. The power went out a few times but was quickly restored. There were heavy winds and rain but not as intense as Irma. After the storm everything was back to normal.

I went to Sosua the day after the storm and got a few photos

Anecdotal Observation.

First I would like to say that I do not believe that any group of people ethnic, cultural or religious is innately better than the other. I have traveled extensively, but the countries I have spent the most amount of time in have been the United States, The Dominican Republic and Colombia in that order. The other countries I have spent time in have not been sufficient to make an adequate assessment.

I retired in October 2014 and 2 weeks later I was living in the Dominican Republic. Since I have been living here I have noticed a pattern of behavior that I do not recall in the other places I have been. I am not saying this pattern is uniquely Dominican, perhaps I am just more sensitive to it because I am paying more attention to my interactions with Dominican people.

My concern is not specifically monger related, I have had business interactions personal agreements with Dominican people both men and woman and have discovered that frequently there is a lack of integrity. Specifically I have noticed that it is difficult to take many of the Dominican people I have met at their word. The most common example is making appointments and Dominicans being late or not showing up at all. It is difficult to understand why make an appointment if you have no intentions on keeping it?

This lack of integrity extends to loaning money. I have learned if you give a Dominican money under the pretense it is a loan the majority of the time it will not be a loan because they will not pay it back in fact the money can be considered a gift and not a loan. The concept of keeping one’s word seems to be foreign. When I purchased my vehicle I had an agreement with the seller to do certain things that were not done at the time of the sale. I did not discover the work was not done until the day after the sale was complete. I ordered some parts for the same vehicle at a local garage and the proprietor advised he made the order, I later discovered he had not ordered the parts when he said he did, however they subsequently came a couple months later. It should be noted I had the same experience at 2 different garages.

And of course from the mongers perspective there are the women who make false promises who say they are going to do something and fail to do what is promised or they change the terms or price which is something many Dominican Republic mongers have experienced at least once. When you challenge them and try to keep them accountable they either make excuses, ignore you and make no effort to change.

By no means am I saying that I have not met people of integrity while living here but it seems like the majority of Dominicans that I have encountered will say whatever they need to say to accomplish whatever their objectives are. The majority of my interaction with Dominican people has been poor to middle class; I have not had the opportunity to mingle with the highly educated and wealthy class Dominicans so I have no idea if the lack of integrity crosses socio ecomomic barriers in the Dominican Republic.

I have the strangest feeling living in the Dominican Republic, I feel connected to the land but not to the people. I cannot imagine living the rest of my life in a place where I cannot take people at their word. I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but if I tell you I am going to do something you can trust there will be a good reason if I do not do what I said I was going to do. As for integrity in the Dominican Republic when I find it it’s like breathing a breath of fresh air…

I have not had as broad or long of an experience as you have, but I have travelled to a few latin countries and I have noticed some of the things you mentioned.

The not being on time part is very much part of the latin culture where "later" can mean in 2 hours, 2 days or 2 weeks.

The part about not living up to financial obligations, I have seen that a lot in countries where they are so poor that it creates a culture of everyone out for themselves, and get away with what you can because next time its you who is being screwed.

Most of these countries, I find the other correlation is the lack of education. Interestingly enough, I find this less of a problem in Cuba where education is more prominent. Now people are very laid back, and will try to get whatever money out of the "gringos" they can, but between themselves seem to have a lot more integrity.

Not sure where in PP you are living these days, but I am heading for my first trip to Sosua Feb 11th for a few days and would love to buy you a drink and have a deeper convo if your interested.

So you can imagine how this way of living/thinking affects Loans, past favors, future plans, etc. They can only focus on the here and now.

Sosua sights October 10th.

I have noticed a few chics have cars now. I heard they have rental arrangements that make the cars affordable for some of the high end chics.

The black SUV looked like a rental and was driven by the chic in the black and white dress.

The black and white dress had the type of body that some men prefer so I can see how she was in a position to maintain a vehicle.

Tenga cuidado con los taxistas

I absolutely love the freedom that driving in the Dominican Republic provides, but the flip side is that driving here can be a scary proposition especially since it seems as if regardless as to who's fault it is in an accident the gringo is always wrong. I have had a few accidents so I am being more strategic as to when and where I drive.

I returned to using Carribe Tours to Santiago and Santo Domingo on most of my excursions because it is cheaper than driving and less risky. With the use of public transportation comes the use of taxis. Recently I had an Santo Domingo excursion where I arrived at the terminal and was flagged down by a taxista.

Normally you wait out front and take the next taxi in que from uniformed taxistas who generally drive white taxis. This particular taxista was not wearing a uniform and had me cross the street to a parking lot and his vehicle was a black SUV but before I got in I asked "cuantos a Agora Mall?" He says "250 pesos" and I said "pero la ultima vez page 200 pesos" He says "nooooooooooooooo es 250 pesos!" Ok, ok I am not going to argue with you over 50 pesos so I get in and we head out.

Now he says while driving "hay mucho traffic dame 300 pesos" ...WTF? You wait till I get in the vehicle and change the price? So I say "tenemos un acuerdo por 250 pesos no?" Then he goes on and on about how heavy the traffic is and frankly IDGAF about the traffic you said 250 pesos and I am going to pay what we agreed. So I pull out 250 pesos and said "mira voy a pagarte 250 pesos que es nuestra acuerdo!" He starts rambling and agrees.

So we get close to Agora Mall and you know what this fool does. He starts calling me "my frenn...my frenn" this fool wants me to get out and walk across the street because traffic is too heavy in front of the mall. So now I am STEEEEEEEEEEEEAMING! You change the price on me and now you want me to walk across the street when all you have to do is make a left turn and drop me off in front of the mall ...REALLY?

He is rambling about traffic bla bla BLAH and I yelled at him "mira este es tu trabajo!" Since when do I have to make things convenient for him? I am paying for a service he should be making things convenient for me...besides every other taxi always drops me off in front of the mall. He keeps on in rapid fire Spanish complaining but drops me off in front of the mall I gave him the money and left.

I hindsight I should have stuck with the regular taxis that work in front of Carribe Tours. On the way back to Puerto Plata I had another excursion in Santiago. On Carribe Tours traffic was horrible leaving Santo Domingo I shit you not it literally took an hour just to get from the terminal to the edge of the city traffic was so bad. I was so glad I was not driving!

When I arrived in Santiago at night I caught a cab from the Santiago Carribe Tours terminal to Hotel Platino for 150 pesos. The following morning I returned to the Carribe Tours terminal from Hotel Platino and this taxista wanted 180 pesos. I actually don't have a problem with fluctuating taxi fares at different times of the day but I absolutely HATE when they try to take advantage of me.

Bienvienidos a La Republica Dominicana!

A time of reflection

Hanzo and I talked off line which caused me to reflect on what I am about to share. I remember reading many of his comments about the Dominican Republic and Dominican people and thinking he was being very harsh. During that time I had travelled extensively throughout Latin America but I had not lived outside the United States.

Since living here I have seen the beautiful mountains of Jarabacoa & Constanza and the simple pristine beaches of Monti Cristi. I travelled by gua gua initially and more recently in my truck to many different parts of the Island and I have had many experiences that I will not soon forget. I remember being in the campo and my host offered me their last bit of rice and chicken. I currently have 2 neighbors that time and time again have gone out of their way to help me without the request of 1 peso.

I have had numerous experiences that endear me to the Dominican people but with that said I must say EVERYTHING that Hanzo said about Dominican people and the Dominican Republic is TRUE! I know now not because he said it or because I have vacationed here but because I have lived it and seen it for myself. Recently I heard someone say that all Dominican people were savages. In my experience many can be perceived that way, however I believe part of the problem is the company we keep and the circles we travel in. If you only deal with hoes you will get monger experiences, therefore the reality is the problem is really in the mirror.

I believe life is a journey with an ultimate destination but before you arrive at that destination there are many rights of passage you have to go through along your journey. In my case Dominican Republic is a stop on my journey. Despite the storms I have faced since living here "me siento como un arbol de platino"..."I feel like a plantain tree" in other words I feel as if I am planted here and because I am planted here I have grown as a person and in knowledge of myself and life itself and I am grateful for the opportunity.

One of the most important assets I have living here is the ability to talk to other ex-pats and even communicating with others in the different groups I am in. I have tried to immerse myself in Dominican culture but I can only absorb so much before I reject it all. Sharing with other Americans ads sanity to what otherwise would be an insane situation.

The majority of my chronology has detailed my mongering exploits, however this experience for me is far deeper than mongering. I have seen my strengths and weaknesses as well learned a lot about human nature. Some lessons in life you know but sometimes you need to be reminded so you can know them again.

After my passport expired I was stuck here for about 2 months but now that issue has been resolved it's time to take a vacation from retirement and return to the real world of my family and friends. I think I am going to do a few weeks and re-calibrate.

I will update this thread until I leave.
