US company Tampa Energy and partners is planning to invest US$50 million in the installation of an ethanol dehydration plant in the Dominican Republic. The ethanol will be processed from sugar cane and officials say that the plant would be in operation in time for the 2008-2009 harvest. As reported in Diario Libre, Tampa Energy chief executive Arthur McDonnell said that the ethanol fuel produced in the DR would then be shipped to the US and mixed with gasoline. McDonnell made the announcement at a Brazil sugar and ethanol conference on Thursday, 15 March. Initially, some 50 million gallons would be produced but the eventual plan is to double this quantity. It was not stated whether a local company is involved in the investment, although Ethanol Dominicana, the Vicini Group and the Central Romana Group have all expressed an interest in producing ethanol.
