US will continue plans to require passports

The US government decided to continue with its plan to require passports, or other secure documents, of travelers from Canada, Mexico and other ally nations, in order to enter the country. The Departments of State and Homeland Security said they expect to officially adopt the new policy - which has generated complaints of travelers from the affected countries, and even from President George W. Bush - before the end of the year. The Department of Homeland Security explains in its website www.dhs.gov that it is exploring the use of biometric technology to create an alternative identification system for travelers and the government of Canada is collaborating with Washington in developing a new document of massive use that could be used on both sides of their common border.

Well they delayed it by a year never the less it will kill the tourism economy in the Caribbean! Even the resorts knew it, there was a couple of them offering to pay for the passport fees if you booked a week with them!

But it's not the money it's the time. In today's age of here & right now, applying for a passport can be a burden. About 2-4 hours of your personal time since you have to do it in person. (fill out form, drive photograper, get picture, drive to agency, wait in line, etc.)

Note: Only 20% of Americans have a passport. Hell BB have you got one yet?

December 31, 2006 – Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

December 31, 2007 – Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

Same here. I think it's only normal to have a passport to travel the world. If you don't have the time or money to obtain it, you should not travel neither.

I got mine right before my february 2006 trip. It almost did not come because they needed extra identification to issue mine. it seems that since 9/11, if you have never had a passport before, you need to provide id documentation before that date to prove your citizenship. i had to fax paperwork down to charleston and talk to people on the phone. If you are going to get a passport dont do it through the post office. it takes too long and your shit is prone to get held up.

I don't know how easy it is. I guess it depends. It took WSJ a few weeks before his renewed passport arrived. I hope it gets to you fast. I need to renew mines in a few months.

US Fed site is still saying Jan 2007 for air crossings in the Western Hemisphere. It does appear that the wording for Land & Sea crossings might have changed. It says "passports may be required Jan 2008". I don't remember it reading that way before.
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

Now if you go to the Department of Homeland Security site http://www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/crossingborders/whtibasics.shtm

The DHS site still says Jan 8 2007 for air travel, and also still says Jan 1 2008 for land & sea crossings. So as of right now they contradict each other.

Something may be up, but in the end your still going to need them at some point... The Passport requirement won't go away....
