Central Bank president Hector Valdez Albizu favors that the IMF remain supervising the country's finances and said that once the current arrangement with the IMF is concluded it should be extended, but with more flexible variations. He said that the ideal situation would be to sign an agreement that isn't of the "Stand-by" variety but said that the country should continue with these types of agreement with the Central Bank. The current agreement was signed in 2005 and is scheduled to expire in 2008. The business sector has urged that the country sign a new agreement with the IMF in order to curb government spending and borrowing.
