Exports from the DR to China have continued to increase even in the absence of a trade agreement or diplomatic relations between the two countries. In 2006, according to figures published in Hoy, trade was valued at US$339 million of which RD$59 million were from Dominican exports to China. According to the Center for Investment and Exports (CEI-RD) exports increased by US$12 million in 2006. Electronics increased by US$4 million, computer parts increased by US$3 million and aluminum waste increased by US$1 million. Ivan Gaton, former head of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the DR, highlighted the importance of China in the international trade markets. Gaton said that the fact that even without a trade agreement, trade with China is higher than trade with Taiwan ("the other China") with which the DR is negotiating a free trade agreement demonstrates Beijing's efficiency. Exports to Taiwan were US$28 million in 2006.
