Aerodom defends itself

The Aerodom business consortium that runs most of the country's international airports has defended the DR and says that the concerns voiced by Canadian authorities about the dangers of traveling to the DR are not justified. Yolanda Manan, public relations spokesperson for the organization, said that international organizations in charge of safety aren't in agreement with Canada's assessment. She said, in Listin Diario, that recently the Transport Safety Association (TSA) and the Civil Aviation Organization (OACI) classified DR airports as some of the safest in the region. Aerodom says that the accusations are somewhat strange since the claims by Canada aren't specific to authorities or personnel at Aerodom. Manan said that there may have been isolated incidents of theft but this is not systematic as was claimed by Canadian authorities. Aerodom's statements come in response to reports by the Canadian government, which has issued a travel warning for its citizens planning to visit to the Dominican Republic. The warning cited the recent increase in crime and concerns with using public transportation. The 9 July advisory made specific reference to the Puerto Plata International Airport where reportedly articles, particularly electronic gear and money seen on the X-ray machines, were stolen either upon entering or leaving the country.
Through May 2007, 377,643 Canadian tourists had arrived, according to Listin Diario. The Ministry of Tourism reports that tour operator feedback is that sales of Dominican vacations from Canada are at a six-year high.
