Can you bring food into the DR. If staying at an ApartHotel you could do most of your cooking. I love to cook so that would be no problem. I am curious if I can bring some frozen steaks into the DR. I know finding a fish market or buying pollo in the DR should be no problem. I don't trust their beef. If you can't is there a realiable butcher to get some American beef? I was thinking of bringing a box of Omaha's steak with some dry ice and I should be set to go.

Hi there :)
If you do plan to bring food, wrap it up real well.
A friend of mine brought meat and his clothes ended up smelling like beef. lol

I violate most of the requirements. lol :)
To be honest, if I were you, I would not bring animal products. The scent from the animal products is quite strong. So there may be a chance that customs will find out.
Besides, the only meat you should be enjoying are the women.
But all jokes aside, if you have meat and your clothing in the same bag, then your clothes will smell. This happened to my friend.

Try the German butcher...all of us, residents and the ones who just stay a longgg time or come regularly, buy there beef, sausages, chicken, ribs, and other cuts there. It is located to the right of the car wash located on the main road. The same main road coming from the POP airport to Sosua. There is a car wash located on the right hand side and it is to the right of it.
Hope this helps.

I brought 5 bottles of champagne with me for New Years 2005! I have also brought the typical snacks items (pop tarts, granola bars, crackers) as well as cooking items such as cooking oil pancake mix, syrup, and hot sauce.
I don't like Dominican food!

Neither do I. I have been to the DR twice and neither time can I say I had a good meal. I tried a lot of the places mentioned here but the food is crap. Each trip it took me a couple of days to recover when I returned home. Sipping that rum and not eating right does a job on an older person like me. How many 100 peso chicken dinners can you eat?
That is the main reason I would prefer to do my own cooking most of the time while in the DR.

Take care.Dominican food is overcooked and oversalted. It's not awful, it just that I can think of dozen types of cuisine that I would rather have.
Rocky's in Sosua is a pretty good place to go for good cheap food. They make a good breakfast and I hear that they have really good ribs. There are several threads on DR1 on the best places to eat in Sosua/Cabarete and Santo Domingo.

you need to eat at better places
Probably true, but how many better places are there? I need a low salt diet. When you cook most of your meals at home your palate gets accustomed to good home cooked meals. 95 percent of the meals I eat I cook myself with Grade A ingredients. I can think of at most 5 places where I would eat.
PJ's is ok, Shark Bar I had some great macaroni salad at the bonfire party, Rocky's didn't impress me. Mori Maui (sp) is pretty good. Next trip I will try more places in the tourist hotel area on Alejuo Martinex (sp). I know I will never eat anything from the night time stand across from Dominos again.
I will try the German butcher place and go the the Super Mercado on the main highway. This way I should be able to get at least one home cooked meal a day. When most of you guys get to be my age you will realize the importance of at least one 3 course meal a day especially the way I put that rum and Presidentes away.
This thought was generated by the kitchenette at Club Residencial. They have just about everything you would need to cook.

I've never concerned myself searching for a low salt (sodium) meal. That being said, I've had some great eating experiences in Sosua. Rocky's breakfasts' are great. I also enjoy their ribs (though some may think they're too sweet), and the pizza and chicken are also very good. Morua Mai's seafood platter cannot be beat!! El Toro's steaks are comparable to the best ones I've had stateside. PJ's will make you VERY ILL, especially if you eat there after the club.

Yeah i agree, PJ's is terrible.. They are a very last option for me... I rather eat a pork sandwich from the pork stand across from the jewelry store... by day 3-5 im already shittin my brains out anyways! :D

I enjoy the club sandwich at PJ's. That is the only thing I eat at that place.
Breakfast at La Roca or at Rocky's is great.
El Torro's Steak house is great for beef
Morua Mai is another good bet for just about anything
Pizza is excellent at Pino's or at Alberto's

The pork sandwich from the stand across the street from the club is the GREATEST!! It's even better in Santiago, because it's 40 pesos vs 80!! The only time I didn't get sick at PJ's was during the day when I had a club sandwich. I think they get careless with cleanliness at night!
i find most food in the DR to be very salty...i don't add extra salt to anything and don't use it in cooking at home so i can see what you're talking about. i do however enjoy dominican food and find that the more "local" places don't get too carried away with the salt. it's the fried stuff that kills me...reasy and salty is not for me :)

Mister NYC, As you have spent 5 months in the DR I would have to say you must know what you are talking about. I know where Rocky's and Morua Mai are located. Directions for the other places.
Maybe ISOCer's can get together to compile one list of the best places to eat with location and prices. I know it would help me for my next trip in January.
I know I said it once and I am going to say it again. If I knew how I would do it myself. ISOC needs to provide it's members, especially the guys with less than 5 trips under their belt with a map. John's Palace has a very nice map on his website of Sosua. If only that map could be used as a basis to start adding additional places. http://sosuapalace.com/Map.html
Since Sosua is so small we could have 1 map for places to eat. Another places for places to pick up chicas. A third map for places to stay. Let's not forget taxi stand, Caribe bus depot, butcher shop, grocery stores, and my favorite liquor stores.
I know most of the information is on this site, but when in Sosua who wants to find an internet cafe and use the search engine?
JDR and BODs are you listening.
BTW Mr NYC those were some very nice pictures you posted. I would love to go fishing for pink snapper with you.

Yeah, I did spend a lot of time down there and do so often. Pink snapper fishing would be good. When do you arrive again?
As for locations:
La Roca ...located across the street from Morua Mai. I dine using the residents menu. American Breakfast is 100 pesos (2 eggs any way you want it, toast, jelly, ham or bacon, orange juice, coffee, and home fries).
El Mulinos (spelling?) - the owner is Pino, old school italian...good black jack player. Great italian food and pizza...located down the block from Super Super and past Eddy's Sports bar...place is on the left hand side. Currently for sale.
Pizzeria Alberto's is located on what I call the back street...the same strip where you will find Bolgna bar/restaurant...the one that leads to the casino. You will find the place on the left hand side. This too is for sale.

I arrived at STI 10/25/05 with 40 hamburgers, 6 rib eye steaks, 2 lbs bacon, 2 lbs each of Roast beef, Salami, bologna and cheese all frozen and jammed into a marboro miles cooler bag. I double wrapped everything in foil and put it in my small checked bag. At customs they ex-rayed the bags and i had to open the food bag ( foil wrap ). Guy asked what is it? I say muy frio bistec. He says propina for me. I gave him Abe and walked away fast. I bring food every trip in a cooler bag. Once i told the guy it was chilled Vodka. A good cooler bag is most important. Now to get the BBQ past customs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One POP customs tip. Stay away from the chica checking bags. The bitch tossed my shit good. And i do not mean my salad.

Cold cuts and canned food for condo. Hamburger and steaks for me and Lou at the bar. " Give a man a fish he eats for the day. Bring the man with the BBQ a shit load of meat and eat large for a week ". I bring as much food as i can. You can always get your clothes washed at the laundry near the Residential. Brand named food at the Playero is expensive. Some local ham is good. Imported salami not too expensive. Local cheese sucks and the Kraft is about 5 bucks for 16 slices. I also go to Costco's and get a box of 36 Hersey bars for $12.50. Chicas kill for good chocolate. Some people bring extra shirts and socks. I bring as much food as the weight limit will allow.

When I lived in santo domingo I would bring in soft sided coolers with frozen meat all the time. I am not sure if there are rules against it but was never eben asked about it. I would bring in steaks, lamb chops, roast beef, brisket, leg of lamb etc. Used to bring in ribs as well but found a place that sold good ribs.
One time on of my suitcases didn't make it on the plane, but fortunately it wasn't the one with the frozen meat! I was worried that I had just lost 200 bucks worth of food, and wondering what I would eat for the next few weeks. . . . .
