The scare over the possible use of potassium bromate in flour used for making bread has led to a 30% decrease in bread sales, according to an article in El Caribe. Bakery owners in Santo Domingo told the newspaper that the decrease in sales reflected the public's lack of confidence. The newspaper also reports on a study by pharmacy students at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) that showed the harmful effects of potassium bromate in foodstuffs.
