It is only possible to fly direct to the DR from the UK by utilising spare seats on package holiday charter flights. This is convenient for me because the departure airport, London Gatwick, is less than an hour from my house. Full price seats are expensive but by looking out for last minute vacancies I have found cheap return tickets to Puerto Plata on my four trips so far (from $500 to $600 return, not bad for an eight hour flight and return though it is usually cramped). It is getting harder to find cheap flights with the increase in taxes and supplements, but I notice that there are from time to time very cheap flights to Punta Cana (under $250 return). I suppose that is because the only people going there from the UK are on AI packages, and if there are empty seats no-one else wants them, whereas there are often a few independents like me wanting to fly to the North of the island (PP, Sosua or Cabarete).
So my question is, now I am more confident about travelling round the island, even with baggage, how would I get from Punta Cana to Puerto Plata cheaply? No problem using Metro or Caribe from SD to PP, but are there scheduled bus services from Punta Cana to SD? Or how much would a cab cost for that leg of the trip?
