According to a study by INDOTEL (Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones) into telephone behaviour, the Dominican Republic heads the list of champion telephone callers. The director of INDOTEL, Dr. José Rafael Vargas, announced this to the enthusiastic audience during the annual general meeting. Dominicans make more telephone calls that all Latin America!! Dominican callers spend over 100 million telephone minutes just in calls to the USA alone. In total they pay for over 1.2 billion telephone minutes per year. Only 5% of these are from landlines, with 95% calling from mobile phones. Almost 99% of all domestic and foreign telephone calls are made from mobile phones.
Around 66% of the population have mobile phones. In Sosúa you'd have to look hard to find a Dominican that does not have a mobile phone (with latest digital camera) hanging from their belt, in their pocket or handbag.
