A week after the Tropical Storm Noel hit the Dominican Republic, Listin Diario is reporting that more refugees and more isolated communities are being discovered. According to reporters Jose Nova and Viviano de Leon, the number of towns and villages cut off from the rest of the country has increased from 137 to 153, and the number of people evacuated increased from 66,000 to 74,500. The number of houses damaged has risen to over 18,000. Today's edition says that the death toll is now at 85 and 48 persons have been declared missing. As a result, the government is asking for patience from the evacuees and other victims, since housing cannot be created from "one day to the next." President Fernandez did tell residents in the Lower Yuna river basin that the government would be renting housing for the immediate future as an interim solution to this serious problem.
