The Guajimia Project, which aimed to relocate, clean up and sanitize one of the most pestilent creeks in Santo Domingo, appears to have had a dramatic effect, although it is not even finished. According to Diario Libre, the work carried out so far by the Santo Domingo Water Authority (CAASD) prevented the entire area from being flooded out, as used to happen before the project was implemented. While a few families were moved out as a preventive measure, the water did not reach the level of their abodes. The project, carried out with Canadian funding worth US$83 million, will eventually relocate many of the families living on the banks of the creek, reconstruct the creek bed, and, in some places, totally enclose the Guajimia in a steel tunnel. One resident told reporters that in previous years, "the waters were up to our necks", but his year (she) made a sancocho and some ginger tea to keep warm. "We could sleep calmly and without fear that the creek would overflow like it used to."
