You ride on the back of these things and they cost 10 pesos during the day and 20 pesos at night. There are 100's in Sosua and area. 8)

Peso = 2.5 cents average.

These things are a blast to ride on.

When you leave your hotel or a bar make sure ya get a Presidente for the ride

Anyone that rides on the moto concho ,, is it standard practice for them to charge more $ if you have a chica on the back of the bike rather than ride solo? I know if it's a Dominican they most likely pay one price whether its one person on the bike or the whole family. It seems they want to charge double when there is a chica on the bike too. If thats the case I'll just get 2 moto conchos for now on, one for me & one for her. Theres always the talking down the price since the supply is way greater than the demand. But I do appreciate what they do as they are making an honest living. If they get me back to the hotel in one piece with a chica I always thrown in a tip.

Word of Caution

Moto-conch's can be a fun way to get around. Can also be very dangereous. My novia's mother got robbed the other day inSosua. In broad daylight by a moto-conch. She is Dominican and obviously not wealthy.

I look for the older moto-conch guys. My personal favorite is Juan who hangs out at the beach. Also Andy and his friend who hang out by the Palace are great.

If a moto-conch guy passes by where you arre going hop off the back. Hitting the ground hurts less than being hit over the head with a pipe.

Had a friend who hopped on a moto-conch and the guy passed his destination. Then another joined him on the side and both guys tried to mug him. He fought back and was lucky. They only got his pesos. While one hits you the other is reaching in your pockets. (chicas do this, one rubs your cock and the other lifts your wallet).

JDR's pricing is correct. If the moto guy is a good one I tip him so he looks out for me. Also tell him when I might need him again. i.e. return trip home. I have seen moto-conch's ask for more when there is two on a moto. $10 RDP (pesos) per person. Double at night.

Also if you see a girl and she always uses the same moto-conch (it is not her "primo, hermano or whatever") it is her novio/chulo. Chulo is a pimp boyfriend. Avoid these girls and moto-conch's. They are always problems. Into drugs, will rob you or come back the next day asking for more money (i.e. RoseMary).

At the casino in Sosua. Avoid all moto-conch's except for ones you know. Lots of thieves there. Casino = wealthy drunk gringo = easy to rob.

The big surpise in my novia's mom getting robbed is this. She was telling me how her mom got robbed, how much money she lost etc... and I keep waiting for the "other shoe to drop". You know, a sad story followed by a request for money. She did not ask for anything. Was just keeping me up on family news. I could not believe it. I fact I am still waiting to be asked for money. This does not happen with a Dominicana. The motto on the Dominican flag is "sad story = gringo's money". National Motto!

I have the same team of motor conches for almost a year and a half. Great guys they are, happy with what I give them.

Often times the motor concho guy will tell you " What ever you want to pay me" when asked how much. Don't go for this!!! You need to set the price before you get on the back of the bike. Most of the time you will be going from your Hotel to the beach/disco all within Sosua. A set price of 10 to 20 pesos daytime , & 30 pesos at night with chica on bike too. If they don't like your price there are 50 more motor concho guys waiting for you that will. Just outside the Clasico disco there had to be at least 15 of them waiting.I have about 3 moto concho guys that are my regulars and if i see them I will only use them.

I just get on the moto. tell the destination.. when we arrive I give them a 10 DR$ note and say goodbye, till next time.. was hardly ever a problem.. if it was a raised eyebrow would do just fine.. that was last year, maybe things changed a bit since then?

Eric and I during our Xmas trip made a habit of showing the Motoconche driver a 20 peso bill before we even got on the the bike. We made it very clear that was what they were getting.
I call them the Dominican roller coaster. You have to have both hands in the air(one with a Presidente) and screaming. Still got my Dominicano tattooa!!

remember this post??????

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was my 4th trip to the DR and on Sat July 10th my motoconche decided to hit the car infront of us. I went flying like superman and landed in the street. Got to give these Dominicans credit. Here I am bleeding and unable to walk, I got helped to a barstool by my friend. While I am sitting at the bar in severe pain, bleeding from my right leg, The driver is standing there asking for payment for the ride... some kid wants to clean the blood of of my shoes for 10 Peso and some street puta ask me to go back to my hotel with her. What a wonderful place!

When my buddy rides on a motoconcho, he puts one hand under the seat behind him and another grabbing the driver's collar. Basically, it's letting the driver know that if he falls, the driver is going to fall with him.

He's never fallen.

If I ever get a car down there I want stickers made up. Oval size, kind of like a smaller version of the European country stickers with a moto silouite and a red circle with a big line through it, as if crossing it off. Put one on for each moto I run over!

You were lucky not to have met me then :)

Rick, as you prob well know up till about 6 months ago the concho's where driving like crazy, on unsafe bikes and trying to rip off anybody left, right and center...

In January 2006 AMET started policing them a lot tougher on driving behavior, vehicle safety and drugs/alcohol..

As a reslut the Motoconjo road-rage has calmed down significantly and I would now actually recommend using a trusted concho again.. but it was out of control before that.. that's why when driving I just paid them no heed and they always gave me right of way (they still do)..

I don't know about Sosua, but in Santo Domingo, they have put a dent in the motorbike population.
There hasn't been a time I have driven through Santo Domingo that I havn't seen the AMET guys pulling over and confiscating motorbikes for lack of documentation. They are easy to spot: you see a couple of AMET cops and a flatbed truck full of motorcycles.
They are literally taking hundreds of bikes off the street.

It is the same thing.. as a result they now drive better moto's, don't drink that much and actually are back to a decent transport service instead of courting death anytime you get on one..

Illegal? What's illegal about them?
What is illegal is the guys riding without insurance, without tags, without licences, and without lights. Those are the ones that are getting snatched up. And they get a lot more pasolas than the small motorbikes.
The bikes themselves are pretty neat. Most of the motoconchos use the 115cc bikes, but you can buy a kickass 135cc with dual disc brakes on the front, 6 speed transmission, and they haul ass.
Kawasaki has also got a nice 125cc 4 stroker that is a nice method of transport!

Believe it or not, even girls with big behinds fit. The bigger the passengers, the farther up on the tank the driver will scoot. Motoconchos are not the brightest in the world, so the will do ANTHING to get a fare. I have seen bikes with a man, a woman, and 4 KIDS on the seat between them. The driver is way up against the handlebars, and the woman is hanging off the back. You gotta see it to believe it.
Clearly you havn't seen the pictures on the DR related sites that show some of the things that get carried on bikes here.

Usually they carry a helmet for when they see AMET, or when another moto gives them the signal that AMET is ahead (knocking on your head is the signal). They don't wear them for safety, only to avoid fines from AMET.

From what I was told (and I don't speak perfect Spanish) but the way the law is written is they only have to have a helmet, they don't actually have to be wearing it...

If you are goping at night it will cost more. If during the day, Moto Conch to PP at the hospital (big round thing on the road for turning) and catch a public taxi to Sosua. The moto conch to PP should cost around 50 pesos at most. The public taxi to Sosua is 25 pesos. It is a shared taxi (kind of like a bus) where people are gettiong in and out of the taxi along the way. But it is a cheap way to travel.

Better to die at your desk in your office back home then to get hit by a big truck in DR.

Those trucks are flying on that highway. The speeds are too high to justify the risk.

Plus it must be close to a 20 mile ride.

Last month while I was in POP I happened to buy a used Pasola (scooter) on a whim. I had always planned to ship my car down there (and still will) and had no intentions of buying a pasola, but the price was right and I thought, "why not". After buying it, the rental car I had sat in the driveway for the next 6 days. As far as I'm concerned, there is no better way to get around POP. In fact, when I return in a couple of weeks, I'm going to get another, this time a new and bigger one. I wouldn't be without one now.

On the other hand, there is no way in hell that I would ride it to Sosua. I have started to dislike that ride even in a car. I wouldn't argure with JimmyD about the distance as I'm sure he knows a hell of alot more about the area than I do, but it sure as hell seems like a 20 mile ride. I have never really had any concerns about getting in an accident. My only concern is that if I do get into an accident, I'll probably be returning to the states minus a leg. Sure, although they drive like total idiots, it seems to me that there really aren't as many accidents as you might expect as a result of the way they drive. In fact, I've been to POP coming up on 7 times in 8 months, and I've seen one accident between a motoconcho and a car in downtown POP. Obviously Sosua isn't so bad as it's not as big and congested as POP, but as far as I'm concerned, motoconcho is the only way to go when in-town.

Good luck.
