View Full Version : AA to cancel weekend non-stop flights to POP

American Airlines will suspend New York City/JFK-Puerto Plata flights on 29Apr06. AA has successfully served this route for years, but the addition of Santiago to their network has huge effects on traffic (STI and POP are 24 miles apart). The suspension is indefinite. I guess the North Coast is finished with tourism from Americans every American is going to Punta Cana instead I would to Puerto Plata is a dump.

How much and how long is a Santiago - Sosua cab ride??

Might stopping in Miami or San Juan before Puerto Plata be preferable?

1 hour and 20 minutes by taxi. It runs about $50 - $60 but you can share a cab.

I haven't even heard of $60. My last 2 trips, they asked for $75 from STI to Sosua.

My return charter flights only cost around $450, which is reasonable (except that I am restricted to 7-day or 14-day trips), and you forgot to mention the other advantages of living in Britain, cold, wet, whores in their mid-thirties at $150 for 40 minutes and you mustn't touch anything, most other women look like dogs, overweight and think their ass is cake, public transport, health and education systems collapsing, and manufacturing almost extinct. On second thoughts perhaps I'll move to the US and walk from STI to Sosua. No, better still, I'll move to the DR! I am a pensioner, with no ties here, so why not?

Pana

The only bad thing with Delta is that they only have one flight going out per day to JFK, and AA they have 3 flights going to JFK so your not really fucked if you miss your flight.

I think I just booked one of the last AA non-stop JFK to POP flights.
28 April flight# 1797.
My return flight on 7 May is POP-SJU-JFK.
Total cost = $331.40

The cheaper Delta flights seem to have disappeared also.
JFK-STI on those dates on Delta was $324.40

------
My 29 June-6 Jul trip is $338.40 on AA
JFK-MIA-POP ....... POP-MIA-JFK :thumbsup2:

Continental nonstop from EWR was $469.50

Delta did not have a flight on 29 June, but for 28 Jun - 6 Jul, JFK-STI was $674.00  ..........that's crazy!!!!.....what, do they think I live in someplace like Atlanta, Detroit or Phoenix??? ;)

So right now the prices from NYC seem to be just about the same going into either POP or STI.

So the choice is between:
Non-stop into STI...and then taxi , rental car, or Caribe Tours Bus.

Connecting flights into POP.....with a relitively cheap taxi into town (or even cheaper gua-gua or even moto if you travel light).

If I was going to fly into STI, I'd take AA just because they have multiple flights all day long. Delta only has one a day each way,and Jet Blue still has those weird middle of the night arrivals and departures.
--------
For about 100 bucks more, you can fly out of Newark, non-stop into POP on Continental, but again, they only have one flight a day!

Still, it is nice to have choices! :)

This is not good news. However it sounds like we will all be able to adapt.
Going forward I wonder if Samana is going to change to become a mongering spot after the International Airport opens there.

Stopping in Miami or San Juan if only if you have time to kill, the flight won't leave for at least an hour assuming that if they're on time. I don't like this. Why should we have to waste 8-12 hrs just to fly to DR from the mainland?

It's extremely slow here at work so i decided to check some flights out.

Leaving in the middle of JuLY, AA is $100 more direct to Sti than it is one-stop to PP. Fuck that, back to the original plan of stopping in Miami. I'm not paying an extra hundred dollars, then another $75+ to a cabby, then driving 2 hours in the middle of summer, possibly in some non-AC cab, just to get somewhere i could have gotten to for $175 LESS. That's fucking retarded. I'll spend the hour-and-a-half layover in MIA sipping iced tea, satisfied i saved 4-5 days room fee at the Europa.
