The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has just published a report that reveals that 42% of the Dominican population lives in poverty. The yearly review by UNICEF also reports that in the past decade poverty has declined from 63.4%, which means that there has been progress in that area. Although the agency realizes that macro-economic stability is a top priority, it also sees an increase in social spending as a way of redistributing wealth and reducing poverty, and called for more social programs. The UN agency also reminds readers that the first of the Millennium Goals is "The eradication of extreme poverty and hunger", and this will require political decisiveness in order to be achieved. Currently, the Dominican Republic is the third worst country in Latin American as far as social spending is concerned.
