When I was here last November me, my cousin, and a friend went to Sosua and stopped in at Sosua Life, Merengues and Classicos. I happened to be carrying an English-Spanish translator (Partner ES800 $500.00). I lost it. I was pretty sure I had left it on a table in Classicos.

Well, last night I stopped in at Merengues and one of the bartenders came over and told me she had found it and that it was at her house, and that she would bring it to work today so that I can pick it up. I hugged and kissed the hell out of her.

Just confirms for me that not all people are assholes, idiots, and thieves. Gonna surprise her with a nice propina tonight and, yes, I mean an actual propina.

I have been thinking about buying this same model. In your opinion is the ES800 worth the $$$$$?

I have the Franklin TES-120 Translator - EXTREMELY basic, one word at a time, won't translate phrases and does not connect to the Internet. Limited vocab. But it's a mere $10 !! It's also a calculator, currency converter and saves names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. What features does the ES800 have ?? Glad you got yours back !!

As with most things, it depends on you. I preferred it because you can type in your text as opposed to referencing some pre-programmed phrases. As you probably know, it's also a talking translator, though it sounds like shit, IMO.

BTW, if you're really interested, I'll give you a good deal on it. I just purchased a new one prior to my arrival on this trip so, if I pick the other up tonight, I'll have two of them. PM me if your interested, or anyone else, for that matter.

True. On another site I used to get into arguements defending the DR people (particularly the poor). Surprisingly, it's a site devoted to the DR.

Thanks.

I had some good luck too. . . When I was checking out of the Europa a few months ago, I absent mindedly left my wallet on the desk counter and walked away. Before I got out in the street, the chica from behind the counter called me and gave me back the wallet. I thanked her and gave her $5. Could have ended up badly, but luckily she was honest.

I've told this story before, but I guess no harm repeating it.

My first ever visit to the original "La Passions'" (down the street from the current location).

Feeling my post happy ending glow, I reach in my pocket and peel off a 100 peso bill to give the chica as a tip.
I walk out of the small massage room (I think they only had two back then?), stop quickly at the bar to say "adios", and then head down Calle Pedro Clisante.

I only make it a few feet when the massage chica (Dolly?) comes running up to me with her hand outstrected and says in Spanglish:

"I think you made a mistake. Did you really mean to give me this?"

I look down in her hand and in the light of day, I see that instead of a 100 peso note, I had actually given her a THOUSAND!

So I smile, thank her, take the 100 peso bill from her hand and replace it with 300 peso tip from my pocket.

And FYI, that has been my standard La Passions massage tip ever since. 300 pesos if I've been satistied with the service (and I almost always am!). :D

Off Subject but yall brought it up so...

Does those pocket translators work well on sentances?
I have Babylon on my PC and it never translates a whole sentance correctly !!

My Franklin TES-120 does only one word at a time (some phrases are built into it) and the vocab is somewhat limited. It's main plus is it's size and cost (maybe $10). If you're in a pinch for a word or two - it can really help out (ie. how can I say "drink" or "bed" ??) Other ones listed here are up to $500 and resemble small laptops - and even talk. Wouldn't want to lose one of those. Some also connect to the Internet - I've got one going on my Blackberry too - just be cautious about roaming Internet fees/charges.

Not sure as I've never used a pocket translator. However, my guess is that they are like many other translators in that they have pre-programmed words and phrases that you are limited to referencing, as opposed to being able to type in whole paragraphs of text and getting the translation.

Hell, some of them are up to $700.00 +. I was looking for 2 key options when I shopped for one. I wanted text to text translation, and a backlight for use at night.

The better half and I did New Years in Boca Chica, then hit the disco for a while.

We left around three in the morning. As we were walking up Duarte to the car, a scraggly puta came running up behind us.

She tapped Ingrid on the shoulder, and handed her the gold and diamond tennis bracelet (45000 pesos)that had fallen off her wrist.

She found it on the floor in the Disco. Now tell me all of them are theives...

Don't know what happened but this post just showed up today. To answer, yes, the translator was returned back in January. I saw her again the other day and I didn't realize she had such a nice ass. She's the bartender at Merengue bar with the mole on her upper lip.

Actually, the guy above your post is the one that bumped the thread today. The one from "Long Overdue" (formerly J&C) was from 1/19.

Yea, I was aware of that, that is why I don't understand why it was that the post from 1/19 just showed up as a new post on the site today, otherwise I would have responded back in January. Something seems a little wacky.

Even the most complicated (and expensive) language translators are almost ineffective, with sentences and phrases that are not preprogrammed, when you compare them to a human translator.

Don't hold your breath for a good one and it'll take even longer for it to be affordable.
