Santiago councilors embarrassed

Santiago city councilors are following in the footsteps of San Cristobal city councilors and are arguing for pay raises claiming that the RD$44,000 they receive in per diems per month is an embarrassment. Hoy writes that councilors aspire to have their monthly per-diems raised to RD$90,000 and that these be converted to salaries as is established by the Municipal Organization Law. Hipolito Martinez, a PLD city councilor, says that the pay that city councilors receive in Santiago is an embarrassment and argued that colleagues in other communities that have less to do earn almost three times as much as the salary they aspire to. The PLD councilor said that "if what happened in San Cristobal was an embarrassment because it was too much, what is happening in Santiago is an embarrassment because it is too low." Martinez pleaded his case adding that the average councilor remuneration is between RD$75,000 and RD$100,000 and added that municipal law reserves 25% of the budget for the payment of personnel salary.
