Although presidential and political campaigning is a constant in the DR, even outside an election year, some might be surprised to learn that yesterday the Central Electoral Board (JCE) officially opened the 2008 presidential campaign for the election that takes place on 16 May 2008. At the opening ceremonies JCE president Julio Cesar Castanos Guzman said that the campaigns might be harsh, marked by a lack of consideration by political adversaries. This year's main candidates are Leonel Fernandez (PLD), Miguel Vargas Maldonado (PRD), Amable Aristy Castro (PRSC), Eduardo Estrella (Fourth Way), Pedro de Jesus Candelier (PAP) and Guillermo Moreno (MIUCA).
