The recent decision by city councilors in Santiago and San Cristobal to give themselves pay raises continues to cause uproar. The Padre Juan Montalvo Social Studies Center says that the wage increases violate Law 176-07. The Center called the raises "shameful" describing them as "an abuse of power which puts the moral and ethics of public servants into question". According to Law 176-07, council workers can't be paid more than the mayor and vice mayor. Ramon Batista, head of Local Development at the Center, said that council workers should take the implications of their disproportionate wage increase into account. Batista added that the increases mock the public, especially considering that most public workers make less than RD$5,000 per month. Yesterday's El Caribe reported that Santiago Mayor Enrique Sued's pay went up from RD$75,000 to RD$180,000 a month, while deputy mayor Petroushka Munoz's wages were increased to RD$108,000. City councilors increased their remuneration from RD$44,000 to RD$100,000 plus other benefits. Other city workers got 30% wage increases. Upon disputing the increase, Mayor Sued pointed out that the councilors work on average 3 to 4 hours on two days a month.
