The Ministry of Public Works has begun filling potholes that slow traffic through the Otra Banda-Punta Cana highway. The two-lane highway is heavily transited. Recent rains have widened the existing potholes, making driving treacherous at some points. On occasion of the visit of President Leonel Fernandez to the Basilica for the Our Lady of Highest Grace celebrations, the people of Higuey and tourism community called his attention to the important road. The government taxes passengers arriving to Punta Cana International Airport with the proceeds intended to be used for tourism infrastructure. The Listin Diario had featured a report on the poor state of the 45 km road. Repairs will be made up to the Punta Cana International Airport.
Meanwhile, Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua said that the government would be concentrating on paving roads all throughout the country this year. Several of the country's main thoroughfares were affected by the recent storms, including Tropical Storms Noel and Olga.
