Dominican deputies are taking home about RD$350,000 each month. Over the current legislative period - 2006-2010 - the legislators have done pretty much what they pleased, and their income has risen considerably. In 1990, deputies received RD$6,000, but by the end of 2006 this figure had reached RD$350,000, as a result of seven different incomes, made up of: Basic salary, expense account, monthly per-diems, Assistance Plan, and the Social Fund. They also receive two complete tax exemptions for importing a vehicle, no matter what kind of vehicle it is. Finally, the deputies receive RD$1,000 per hour for attending committee sessions and a deputy is allowed to belong to four committees. Other perks are RD$10,000 a month for fuel and RD$3,000 a month for telephone expenses. This means that over four periods (1990-2006) Dominican deputies have received salary increases worth 7,000%. Yes, seven thousand percent. In contrast, the minimum wage over the same timeframe only increased by 121% for the public sector and 138% for private sector employees.
