We need those years of "normal" experiences (good and bad) to have a fully developed psyche.
That way, when your in your 40's, you can enjoy these trips to the DR and do all the crazy stuff you did (or wanted to do) in your 20's, plus have the "maturity and wisdom" to avoid most of the problems that can develop.
