Coming from Guerra in Santo Domingo province, the daughter of a stevedore and a washerwoman, Mercedes Frias obtained a degree in geography at the UASD university in Santo Domingo and took to Italy her desire to help the working class and her fellow immigrants. After immigrating to Italy, where she was married to an Italian and had three children, Frias became active in Tuscan politics, and became well known for her championing of immigrants and other vulnerable people. Sitting on the city council, Frias made a name for herself, and won over 200,000 votes in this week's Italian election, enough for her to win a deputy's seat in the Italian Parliament. Frias has said that she will represent the three million immigrants currently in Italy.
