El Caribe is reporting that the Central Electoral Board is worried about a possible massive rate of abstention in these elections, which are just one month away. Nelson Gomez, the head of the JCE Administrative Chamber, told reporters that the biggest challenge to the successful election process would be to reduce the traditionally high abstention rate. He cited that some studies carried out in the Cibao indicate a possibility of a 50% rate of abstention among voters. He said that traditionally the JCE expects an abstention rate of about 40% for the mid-term elections. Gomez said that in order to combat this, the JCE has launched an intensive media campaign to encourage people to vote. There are 5.3 million Dominicans listed on the electoral rolls. They will have the opportunity to vote for 32 Senators, 178 deputies, 151 mayors and 962 city council members. The JCE will use 12,527 voting booths at 3,888 voting stations.
