A recent study by the Center for Export and Investments (CEI-RD) points to market niches for Dominican products in Central America. The DR has been at disadvantage in trade with Central America, after the country signed a free trade agreement with the region in 1999.
The CEI says that Dominican producers could sell cacao beans, pharmaceuticals, plastic tubes, plastic furniture and leather products to Costa Rica.
Other products with a market are wires, hormones, pharmaceuticals, and seeds (Nicaragua), and pharmaceuticals, cacao beans, beef, rum and chemical products (El Salvador). To Guatemala, the experts believe we could market cement, books and printed material and jewelry, while in Honduras there is a market for fertilizers and plastic tubing. The DR exported US$89.6 million to Central America between 2001 and 2005, but imported US$850 million.
The CEI reports that Dominican exports were up in 2005, and for the first time non-free zone exports nudged above the US$1 billion mark, to US$1,080.6 million. This was up by 20% compared to US$897 million in 2004.
