Over the weekend, Fenatrano transport union leader Juan Hubieres threatened a halt to all public transport in the southern and western regions of the Dominican Republic as a way of calling attention to what he called the unequal distribution of subsidized diesel fuel. After meeting with Melanio Paredes, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Hubieres has called off the today's action. Minister Paredes will have a full agenda today as he meets with representatives of the major petroleum distributors this morning, and a few hours later he will meet with the leaders of the National Association of Gasoline Retailers (Anadegas). Paredes has said that if necessary he would use police and military units to guarantee public access to fuels.
