A group of airline pilots has requested that the National Transportation Safety Board reopen its investigation into the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 five years ago, as reported in the NY Daily News. The Santo Domingo-bound flight left from JFK International Airport and crashed shortly after take-off into Belle Harbor, killing all 260 passengers and crew and five people on the ground. Most of the passengers were Dominican. The request comes after recent mishaps involving Airbus aircraft. The New York-based AA pilots say they are convinced that uncommanded rudder movements were partly to blame for the November 2001 crash. The NTSB investigation into Flight 587 concluded that the pilot, encountering wake turbulence, moved the rudder back and forth, building pressure on the tail fin until it snapped off.
