Just back from 2 weeks in the DR. I spent my first 6 nights in Sosua, 5 in Las Terrenas and the last 3 back in Sosua.

I will try to do a "tourist" kind of report about Samana peninsula. Sorry for those who prefer monger type report but I think I have some good infos and pics to share about the place.

It was a great trip, the weather was perfect and the 4 girls I had all gave me a good time and I only had a little drama when I decided to leave my Haitian travel companion but all was good the next day when I gave her some pics of her.

I met some great ISOC members, old and new ones to me, hi guys, it was great meeting all of you.

I will not bore you with another Sosua report but stay tuned for the Samana adventure.

For the Sosua - Las Terrenas trip, we took a bus that do Puerto Plata - Samana city each day. The bus pass by Sosua at 7am and stop in front of the Texaco station in El Batey, where there is the new gambling place.

The price is 200 pesos. It's not a big bus like Caribe Tour but bigger than a Gua-gua. It's not really direct because it stops at a lot of place to let in and out peoples. It took about 4 hours to reach Sanchez. The bus was crowded but it was not that bad a ride, way better than a Gua-gua.

To go in Las Terrenas you have to get off the bus in Sanchez, before Samana city.

In Sanchez we took a taxi for the ride over the mountains, across the peninsula. The taxi was 600 pesos. You can always take a gua-gua for about 50 pesos but I don't like it with my luggage and I didn't want to wait for one.

The ride through the mountain is spectacular. The road is like a car and a half wide and it's always up, down, righ or left. The views are great. It took about 40 minutes to reach Las Terrenas.

Nice to meet you also.

No Clasico or anything like that there but there are girls to be found at night, in the discos. I was happy that I had mine, it's a very different vibe than Sosua, it's really not a Puta town.

But you should go, I tought it was great. More like a "normal" vacation/beach town.

We stayed in Hotel Las Palmeras. $45 a night, AC, Fan, cable tv, fridge, hot water, 24H electricity, guard at night. They have 10 rooms and there is a nice restaurant also. Breakfast for 2 is also included and was very good. We had nice omelets filled with ham, cheese, tomato, etc. Fresh natural juice also.

I liked the place so we stayed there for 5 nights.

Las Terrenas is a very different place than Sosua or Cabarete. Lot of French, Italian, some German, not a lot of Canadian, and didn't saw any American.

The town is nice but the streets are really bad. They put sewage pipes and the work is half finished, a year later... The street are muddy in the morning and dusty in the day. And, the traffic is terrible: motos, 4-wheelers, car, trucks, etc. They must do something about that. I like to walk and it's not a good place for that as of now.

Much better was walking on the beach. We walked for about 2 hours on the main beach. Very quiet beach, some little bar/restos along the way.

You'll need more than a couple of days, IMHO, to enjoy the place.

As for hotel, I don't know more than where I stay. There are some cheaper places as well. They seem ok from the street.

No, I didn't go whale watching, maybe next time.

We took a side trip one afternoon to El Limon and Samana. The views on that road are less spectacular than the mountain road between Sanchez - Las Terrenas but it was a nice trip also.

We took a gua-gua from LT to El Limon and another one from El Limon to Samana. It took about 2 hours including the wait for a gua-gua to fill.

The cost is 50 pesos per person for each gua-gua. Really cheap and a nice way to meet and chat with Dominicans.

The gua-gua going to El Limon, a four doors pick-up. We were lucky to be inside, on the back seat, but it look fun also in the bed.

We took the same trip back to Las Terrenas, in gua-gua. A taxi wanted to take us to LT direct. He first asked 1500 pesos then 1300 then 1200. The guy followed us for some time and was now at 1000 pesos when I decided to be less polite and get rid of him.

I really liked what I saw in Samana. Nice size city with probably a lot of opportunities (chicas). I'll try to spend some nights there in the future.

Discos in Las Terrenas

There is maybe 5 discos. I've been to 3:

La Bodega: Open air, they sometime have a band playing, I liked it

Opalo: Trendy place, all white, brand new, not my cup of tea

El Toro Sobre El Techo: On the beach, they have the worst bar I've ever seen, the top is flush to the front and your knees are always hitting the bar

Not much available girls but some could be had, again I didn't search for any. I had my chica and on a quiet night some guys came around her like vultures the minute I got to the bathroom. I guess they were "In search of chicas", better luck next time !

Places to eat in LT

Lot of nice restos and not a lot of North American type food. More European especially French cuisine. But be prepared to pay, it's not cheap.

The included breakfasts at the hotel were good as well as the different dishes we had there. More Italian this time, lot of pastas etc. We also had some nice pizza from a place near the hotel.

But my best lunch was in Sanchez.

More variety and a better range of price in Sosua, IMHO.

After 5 nights there, it was time to return to Sosua. I had the hotel manager call me a cab and we were on our way to Sanchez.

That's were the bus stop in Sanchez

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/ilikenacional/las%20terrenas/100_6047.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/ilikenacional/las%20terrenas/100_6050b.jpg

The total for the meal, 2 big Presidentes, a cola: about 520 pesos. The owner even had her son took us back to the bus stop and the kid never accepted a peso from me. I invited him to share a grande with me and told him to say Muchas gracias again to his mother. Great people.

The ride back to Sosua was better, less crowded so less stop along the way.

So back in Sosua for my last 3 days and I had my little drama for the trip when I dumped my travel companion. She was not happy about it but well, she should not let me go out alone in Sosua !

I think it's ok now, she was happy when I gave her some pics and I didn't had a beer bottle behind the head !

Some more sun before going home

All in all, it was a great experience. I will be back, probably in Samana city.

The place is really nice, the views, vegetation, etc. The people there are also great, no one hassle you there.

If you think about going there, don't expect Sosua. There is only one place like Sosua. There are girls to be had there but it's not a whore/party kind of place.

With that in mind, go and enjoy the beauty of the Dominican Republic and it's peoples !

Thank you for reading my adventure and feel free to ask any questions.

The End.

Yes El Catey airport. Some charter go there winter time, not much. Not much Canadians there yet, didn't saw any American. The people in Las Terrenas are afraid their city may turn in another Sosua !

I want to explore Samana city next time, more of a bigger city and pretty nice.

That's very true. If you always hang in Sosua with your friends, you'll never learn spanish. That's one of the reason why I prefer to travel solo, I meet and chat with much more different people than if I was always with friends from my country. Not to say that if I meet a member I will not sit and chat with him, I always like to meet other members.

Some people, even from my country, have a difficult time figuring where I come from.

I like it that way.

The flight.

It was the worst airline I had in my life: Canjet. The seats were like 1,5" thick, no leg room, bad food, etc.

It took about 4 hours 20 to reach POP airport from Quebec city, usually it's less than 4 hours. They probably save on fuel by going slowly.

I must say that I'm a little spoiled, last time in October I was upgraded first class on Air Canada. Day and night.

But the price was not bad for 2 weeks, $580 and I made it back home alive !

For the rum lovers.

I found a bottle that I never saw in the DR before: Bermudez Don Armando 10 years old. What a great rum ! I found it in a little dusty shop in Las Terrenas.

It's the only Dominican rum made from pure sugar cane. All the other one are made from molasses. It's aged 10 years so it's really smooth. Great on ice.

If you ever tried Barbancourt 5-stars, you know what I'm talking about.

I was glad to put a face to the name after all this time. Sorry we did not have time to organize something together but there will be plenty of opportunities in the future, I'm sure, including an outing to Haïti together.

Great report on the peninsula. I was intending to go there soon anyway, but these comments make me even keener. Sounds like my sort of place!

Hi Weyland, thank you for your comments. I can't write a story like you but I tried to put useful details for anyone who might be interested in the place.

I've nothing against the Americans, it was just an observation ! Did not saw any brits neither ! I heard that the Thunderstars were there for a couple of days, I'm curious to hear what they tought.

As for the meal, It was only one meal but we were not that hungry and we had enough for two. She had a Sprite and I had 2 grande Presidentes, so I tought it was quite cheap. We even got a ride to the bus station for free ! Great people, when I'm there again, I'll stop again.

And, yes, I don't forgot about Haiti. I could have gone with the girl I was with but not enough time.

Oh, your reports/stories are great, as always !

Other than last time in DR, I usually rent a car for my entire stay, get my map, and just go... I go between Santiago and Sosua, and also to the Capital...

An American friend I met down there is a bit more adventurous than me (ex military guy)... He just literally grabs a packpack, and jumps on the Gua-guas from town to town...

Next time there I want to do something similar, with chics i've met, are meeting now, but i've gotta rent a car.... just like the freedom...

Plenty of time for that. You're still a young man. I will brainwash you during our long taptap rides in Haïti!

Yes, I was thinking about renting a car but I changed my mind. I don't like the idea of having to always think about a car on vacation. I would feel like a slave: is it safe there, am I sober enough to drive, can I park it there, do this motoconcho will hit us, etc.

On the other hand I like to ride on buses and gua-guas (or publicos). I find it less adventurous than driving a rental car and you're never alone ! Always interesting peoples to meet on board.

Anyway, go see the place and try to report back !

ILN great report, good pictures too.

It seems that little has changed over the years on the pensinula. Although the casino is new.

I heard that the Thunderstars were there for a couple of days, I'm curious to hear what they thought.
Don't hold your breath! We are all still waiting for Thunderstar's promised lavishly illustrated report from his 17-week stay in the DR last summer! The one that was (supposedly) going to secure him BoD membership! Friggin' useless Brits!

Hi CMike. When was your last time there ? Did you stayed in Samana city ?

Thank you for the comments.

I totally agree with all this. On two different holidays I have gone to distant pueblos with guys in their rentals and when we got there they were frightened to get out of the car and leave it to look around, so what was the f*cking point of their driving for 45 minutes each way?

Even better is my system of not having a car myself but letting guys like Ajax, Thunderstar and WhyNotMe drive me around. I would have liked to tip them generously but I was worried they would be offended so I just criticised their driving instead.

But gua-guas and publicos are fun, though.

That's the way to go !

I had a great roadtrip in Cuba with Whynotme driving. He's a great driver, I don't know what was your complaints ! He got a ticket but it was not his fault...

I was not alone on the backseat, there was LM and a playful Cubana. She entertained us while Whynotme drove and Kevy co-piloted !

Yes, he is a very skilful driver, I was just kidding. He kindly took me and a similar line-up to Santo Domingo (LM, Kevy and TG37). Actually it was Kevy's navigating on the way back that I was criticising, but at least I got to see parts of SD which I otherwise would not have. :)

If Kevy reads this my ass is toast

We had this discussion, Mr Backseat driver without a clue where he is going. We made it back!

I was in the supermarket Tropical this morning and they had a stand with some free samples of the Bermudez Don Amando. My favorite has been Barcelo over the years but you are right this is very smooth and is the same price as the Barcelo (195pesos) so I will stock it as well in my bar.

It's the best kept secret in the DR. I hope they will stock some on the north coast.

After sampling it the first time, I tought they made an error at 200 pesos. A bottle like that up here is $50 easy.

Sad thing is that my bottle is finished...... Oh well, another good reason to return ! ( but, they also have great rum in Cuba, y chica tambien ! )
