NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A Continental Airlines flight to the Caribbean suffered a hydraulic failure and returned to Newark Liberty International Airport shortly after takeoff Sunday, an aviation official said.

Flight 512 declared an emergency at about 9:45 a.m. and landed at the airport at 10:12 a.m., said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Boeing 737 "had a system hydraulic failure but they were able to land safely," Peters said.

He said redundant systems in the airplane enabled it to land.

There were no reports of injuries.

The flight, scheduled to take off at 9:10 a.m., was heading to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, according to Continental's Web site.

Peters said he did not know how many passengers were aboard not whether they were transferred to another plane.

The airline did not immediately return a call Sunday.

Wow. How scary is that? This was the flight I took to POP in June. I believe it's the only plane that Contintental uses to go to POP and that they only have one flight to POP a day.
