President Leonel Fernandez maintains a comfortable 52% lead over PRD opposition candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado, who has 35% of voter preference (up from 31.1% in November 2007), according to the most recent Gallup-Hoy poll. The 52% lead (up from 46.7% in November 2007) would be enough for President Fernandez to win in a first round, and not have to negotiate with other candidates. The poll showed that PRSC candidate Amable Aristy Castro's support has declined the most, going to a 7.5% of the voter preference from 10.2% in November 2007. Eduardo Estrella of the Fourth Option shows 2.4%, and Pedro de Jesus Candelier, Guillermo Moreno and Trajano Santana have less than 1% of the vote.
President Fernandez is especially strong in the east (58%), Santo Domingo metropolitan area (57.4%). He is weaker in the north (48%) and south (45.2%) The Gallup-Hoy poll was held 16-20 February, and 1,200 people were interviewed nationwide.
